Men's Lacrosse Starts Strong and Finishes Off Emerson, 16-9

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.— Graduate student Will Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) matched his season high with six goals and added an assist, junior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won a career-high 21-of-27 faceoffs and scooped up a career-best 15 ground balls, and Babson College scored the first six goals of the game on the way to defeating Emerson College, 16-9 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse game Friday evening at Rotch Field.

With the win, the Beavers captured their third win in four games this month to improve to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in conference games while Emerson lost for the third time in four games and fell to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) scored three goals and graduate student Ryan Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) contributed two goals and three assists in the victory. Junior Christian Brofft (Pottstown, Pa.) tallied a goal and two assists, classmate Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) and first-year Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) added a goal and an assist each, and senior Matt Stucchi (Rexford, N.Y.) and first-year Jack Feeks (Georgetown, Mass.) scored one goal each. Senior goalie Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif) made 11 saves in the victory.

Sophomore Jack Burns (Clarksville, Md.) scored four goals to lead the Lions, while first-year Aedan Kiniry (Westport, Conn.) tallied a goal and two assists and junior Birk Swan (Palos Verdes, Calif.) added a goal and one assist. Seniors Jack O'Rourke (Palisades, Calif.) and Nicholas Fulgione (North Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Benson Offit (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored once each, and grad student goalie Malcolm McGrath (Ridgefield, Conn.) made 24 saves and scooped up eight ground balls in the setback.

A fired-up Babson squad came out with a purpose, scoring nearly a goal per minute for the first six-plus minutes. Spangenberg fired in two in a row to put the Beavers up 2-0 less than two minutes in, and Brofft and Smith added two more in the next two minutes to make it 4-0. Price and Spangenberg continued the scoring parade as the lead ballooned to 6-0 with 8:31 remaining.

Emerson got back-to-back goals later in the period to get on the board, but Price and Stucchi answered for the Beavers to regain the six-goal margin early in the second frame. The teams traded two-goal rallies the rest of the half with Price and Tauss scoring for Babson to give the Green and White a 10-4 lead at the intermission.

Emerson continued the two-goal theme to start the third quarter as Kiniry set up Burns and Offit, but Kenney answered for Babson to stop any momentum. The Beavers got three in a row, two from Spangenberg and one from Kenney, to make it 14-7 with 9:27 remaining in the fourth quarter. A pair of Emerson goals was offset by Spangenberg's sixth marker and a late goal to Feeks to clinch the win.

The Green and White had a whipping 62-30 advantage in shots, a 43-29 margin in ground balls, and won 22 of the 28 face-offs. Babson was good on all 28 clear attempts and Emerson was successful on 25-of-28.

Babson is back in action on Sunday with a non-conference game at No. 4 Inside Lacrosse/5 USILA Middlebury at 1 p.m. Emerson plays Tuesday at No. 10/12 Bowdoin at 7 p.m.
