Game Preview: Men's Lacrosse at Emerson

SERIES HISTORY
• Babson is 9-0 all-time against Emerson in a series that dates back to 2014.
• The Beavers beat the Lions by an average margin of over 13 goals over seven meetings between 2014-21 before recording a pair of much more competitive victories last spring.

LAST MEETING
• Senior Matt Stucchi scored three times and finished with a career-high seven points as the Beavers overcame and early six-goal deficit to defeat Emerson, 15-11, in a NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinal on May 2, 2022, in Babson Park.
• Junior Topher Bower had four goals and the trio of senior Chi Chi Price, sophomore Emmett Martin and Lee Sipes M'22 all scored twice for the Beavers, who went in front on Stucchi's tally just under four minutes into the third quarter.
• Senior Nicholas Fulgione finished with six goals and one assist and Kyler Celotto scored twice for the Lions, who led 6-0 with 3:23 to go in the opening stanza.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (7-3, 3-0 NEWMAC) is looking to rebound from an 11-10 loss to Williams last Saturday at home.
• Bower had four goals, Price and graduate Will Spangenberg both scored three times and junior Grey Sunderland won 15-of-23 face-offs while scooping up nine ground balls for the Beavers, who rallied from a four-goal deficit over the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter.
• Spangenberg (30-23-53) is tied for 24th in Division III averaging 5.30 points per game, Price (35-3-38) has put up at least three goals in seven of 10 contests and graduate student Ryan Kenney (27-9-36) had his run of seven consecutive multi-goal outings stopped in last Saturday's loss to the Ephs.
• Sunderland is winning 51.3 percent of his face-offs (102-of-199) and has scooped up 64 ground balls, junior Dillon Quinn leads the defense with 17 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers and senior Will Parducci ranks second among NEWMAC goalies in goals against average (10.89), save percentage (.570) and saves per game (13.80).

SCOUTING THE LIONS
• Emerson (5-8, 1-2 NEWMAC) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 20-9 win over Emmanuel on Tuesday.
• Junior Birk Swan (3g, 6a) and Fulgione (5g, 3a) combined for eight goals and nine assists, sophomore Jack Burns scored five times and senior James Toomy won 18-of-25 face-offs and collected 13 ground balls for the Lions, who got 16 saves over the first three quarters from graduate student Malcolm McGrath.
• Swan (23-40-63) ranks seventh in Division III in assists per game, Fulgione (32-22-54) is third in the conference in goals and Burns (35-7-42) has at least three goals on six occasions this spring.
• Toomy has won 46.4 percent of his face-offs (137-of-295) and has picked up 63 ground balls, senior Josh DeMattos leads the defense with 48 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers, and McGrath owns a 13.13 goals against average and a .565 save percentage while making 14.46 saves per game.

NEWMAC RESET
• Entering the final three weekends of conference play, Babson is the lone unbeaten in the league and sits atop the standings at 3-0, while Springfield (3-1) and MIT (2-1) sit just a game back in the loss column.
• A victory at Emerson on Friday would secure the Beavers' spot in next month's five-team NEWMAC Tournament.

PRICE NAMED TO USILA TEAM OF THE WEEK
• After putting up eight goals and two assists for 10 points in games against UMass Boston and Williams, Price was one of 10 players named to the USILA Division III Team of the Week on Tuesday.
• He totaled a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists to surpass 100 points for his career against the Beacons and scored three times in the loss to the Ephs.

LION HUNTERS
• Price has scored 11 goals in three career games against Emerson, while Stucchi (3-7-10) and Bower (3-4-7) combined for six goals and 11 assists in two matchups last season.
• Sunderland has won .683 percent of his face-offs (54-of-79) in three games against the Lions while scooping up 32 ground balls.
• Junior Ford Carney has collected 12 ground balls in three career games versus Emerson.

NUMBERS TO KNOW
• The Beavers are 4-1 on the road this season and have outscored their opponents 40-18 in the second and third quarters.
• Babson ranks first in Division III in turnovers per game (14.00) and clearing percentage (.920).
• The Green and White is 7-0 this season and has won 21 of its last 22 games going back to the start of the 2020 campaign when leading at halftime.
• Babson is 5-2 on the year and 12-4 dating back to the start of last season when forcing eight or more turnovers.
