Men's Lacrosse Uses First-Half Run to Top Springfield, 15-9

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Graduate student Will Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) finished with three goals and four assists for seven points and senior Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made a career-high 19 saves to help No. 20 Babson College defeat Springfield College, 15-9, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday at Stagg Field.

Babson has won five of its last six games to improve to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in league play, while Springfield has dropped two straight games to slip to 3-7 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC.

Graduate student Ryan Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) and first-year Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) both contributed three goals and one assist, while senior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) and junior Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) added two goals apiece for the Beavers. Fellow junior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 10-of-17 face-offs and scooped up eight ground balls in the victory.

Graduate student Conor Tracy (Walpole, Mass.) and seniors Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) each scored three times for the Pride. Senior Steven Betsch (Port Washington, N.Y.) won 13-of-26 face-offs and collected eight ground balls, classmate Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led all players with nine ground balls and the duo of sophomore Dean Pesce (Monroe, N.Y.) and junior Jack Hamilton (Falmouth, Mass.) combined to make 12 saves in the loss.

Springfield won three of the first four face-offs and got goals from Nocito, Tierney and Tracy less than four minutes into the contest to build a 3-1 lead before Babson settled in an seized control of the game with a 7-0 run. Tallies by Tauss and Smith just 66 seconds apart tied the game at the 5:32 mark of the first and Kenney notched his first goal of the game just over two minutes later to give the Beavers a 4-3 lead.

Spangenberg made it 5-3 with his first goal of the contest early in the second and junior Sammy Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) caught Hamilton sleeping and scored his first goal of the season from just over the midfield line off the ensuing face-off extend the margin to 6-3. Back-to-back goals by Kenney pushed the Babson lead to 8-3 with 5:21 to go until halftime.

Tracy got the Pride as close as 10-6 with goals 31 seconds apart with 11:04 left in the third but Smith converted a feed from Spangenberg eight seconds later and then scored again at the 9:28 mark to help the visitors regain a 12-6 edge. Parducci turned away nine shots in the third quarter Price scored twice in the span of 30 seconds to give Babson its largest lead of the game at 14-7 with 9:13 remaining in the game.

Springfield finished with a 48-44 edge in shots and a 38-30 advantage in ground balls while both squads converted 19-of-21 clears.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it visits UMass Boston at 7 p.m., while the Pride will host Emerson next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• The Beavers have won four of their last six games against Springfield since 2018, which includes two straight wins at Stagg Field.
• Babson is 6-0 on the year and has won 20 of its last 21 games when leading at halftime going back to 2020.
• Spangenberg has now registered at least five points in seven of the Beavers' first eight contests and has put up seven or more points four times.
• Babson has outscored its first three NEWMAC foes 31-9 in the first half.
