Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine—No. 20 Babson College mounted a furious rally to cut a four-goal fourth-quarter deficit to one with 52 seconds remaining before suffering a 13-12 loss to No. 10/15 Bowdoin College in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Tuesday night at Whittier Field.
Babson, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, is now 5-2 on the year. Bowdoin won its third straight game to improve to 6-2 overall.
Graduate Will Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) had three goals and two assists, junior Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.) scored three times and graduate student Ryan Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Beavers. First-year Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) tallied twice, junior Dillon Quinn (Spring Lake, N.J.) forced a pair of turnovers and senior Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made 11 of his 17 saves in the second half.
Sophomore Jason Lach (Washington, D.C.) led all players with five goals, junior Will Byrne (Darien, Conn.) contributed three goals and one assist and classmate Ethan Barnard (Boxford, Mass.) won 22-of-28 face-offs while leading all players with 12 ground balls for the Polar Bears. Junior Nate Ryan (San Diego, Calif.) had two caused turnovers and sophomore Robert Hobbs (Wayne, Pa.) made 10 saves in the victory.
Down 12-8 less than three minutes into the fourth quarter, Spangenberg and Bower notched back-to-back goals to pull the Green and White within 12-10 with 6:03 remaining. Byrne answered back 33 seconds later to make it a three-goal game, but Bower converted a feed from Spangenberg following a turnover with 1:31 to go and senior Kyle Sanborn (Brookfield, Conn.) forced a turnover to help set up Spangenberg's tally to get the Beavers within 13-12 with 52 seconds to go in the contest.
The Polar Bears won the ensuing face-off but senior Hayden Bean (Winchester, Mass.) and junior Brendan Maher (Melrose, Mass.) helped force another turnover by the hosts along the left sideline to give the Beavers one final possession. Kenney beat his defender but his shot from the left alley took a deflection off the stick off a defender and was caught by Hobbs.
Lach scored four times in the opening quarter to stake Bowdoin to a 6-1 advantage and notched his fifth goal of the game to match the hosts' largest lead of the night at 9-3 with 6:09 to go in the second. Kenney scored to make it 9-4 at the half and set up a pair of scores and tallied again to cap a four-goal run as the Beavers pulled within 9-8 with 4:21 to play in the third.
The Polar Bears answered back with three straight markers as first-year Sam Raye-Steiner (Waban, Mass.) and junior Liam Tasker (Lincoln, Mass.) scored 63 second apart late in the third, while fellow junior Oliver Bernstein (Brookline, Mass.) notched a man-up goal to push the margin back to 12-8 with 12:15 to go in the fourth.
Bowdoin held a slim 41-37 edge in shots and scored a pair of extra-man goals while holding the Beavers scoreless on six man-up chances.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Springfield at 12 p.m. while Bowdoin takes on Amherst at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• Both games over the last two seasons between the Babson and Bowdoin have been decided by a single goal.
• Tuesday's loss is the first of the season for the Beavers when scoring at least 10 goals.
• Spangenberg has registered five or more points in six of seven games this season, while Kenney now has at least two goals and four or more points in five straight outings.
• Babson held the Polar Bears to their second lowest scoring output of the season while forcing them into a season-high 21 turnovers.
