Men's Lacrosse Stymies Coast Guard in NEWMAC Opener, 16-8

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Graduate student Ryan Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) scored a game-high four goals and visiting Babson College held the Coast Guard Academy scoreless for nearly 36 minutes to start the game en route to a 16-8 win in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

With its third straight win, Babson improves to 4-1 overall and starts league play 1-0. Coast Guard, which has dropped two straight games, slips to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Graduate student Will Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) had three goals and one assist, senior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) scored twice and first-year Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) chipped in with a pair of tallies to pace the Beavers. Junior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 10-of-20 face-offs, classmate Sammy Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) scooped up a team-high four ground balls and senior Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made eight of his 12 saves in the first half.

Senior Taylor Gustafson (Littleton, Colo.) scored three times and classmate Caleb Holdridge (Waterford, Conn.) contributed two goals to lead the Bears' offense. Fellow senior Gunnar Brodfuehrer (Lexington Park, Md.) won 7-of-12 face-offs, sophomore Oliver Bolton (Darien, Conn.) tied for game-high honors with four ground balls and senior Dan Lucas (Weston, Conn.) made 17 saves in the loss.

Up 1-0 late in the opening quarter, senior Kyle Sanborn (Brookfield, Conn.), Spangenberg and Price all scored in the span of 93 seconds to extend the Babson lead to 4-0. Price scored again just over three minutes into the second and Spangenberg tacked on two more goals to give the Green and White a 7-0 advantage at the half.

Kenney notched his second goal of the game two minutes into the third quarter before sophomore Ryan Hunter (Bethesda, Md.) got Coast Guard on the board with 9:08 to go in the stanza. Smith answered back at the 6:48 mark and Price completed his hat trick 38 seconds later to give the Beavers their largest lead of the afternoon at 10-1 with 6:10 to go in the third.

The Bears notched six of the next eight goals, including two apiece by Holdridge and Gustafson, to pull within 12-7 with 6:24 left in the fourth. They would get no closer though, as Kenney and Sunderland scored just 21 seconds apart to make it 14-7 with 3:55 remaining, while senior Hayden Bean (Winchester, Mass.) and Smith both scored over the final three minutes for the final margin.

The Beavers finished with a 51-41 edge in shots and a 24-20 advantage in ground balls while going a perfect 17-for-17 on clearing opportunities.

Babson returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Clark at 12 p.m. while Coast Guard travels to Wesleyan on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
