WHAT TO KNOW
• The Babson men's and women's track & field teams travel to Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego to compete in the Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Meet to begin the season for the third time in program history on Saturday.
• The field events get underway at 12 p.m. EDT and the track events are slated to start at 2:20 p.m. EDT.
2022 ROSS & SHARON IRWIN COLLEGIATE MEET HIGHLIGHTS
• The Beavers broke four school records last season at Point Loma, which included senior Jed Kaufman posting a time of 15.19 in the 110-meter hurdles to better a 15-year-old mark set by Dan Cowan '08 back in 2008.
• Junior Anthony Rodriguez became the new school record-holder in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:55.20 and classmate Eric Bottern surpassed Jose Gaztambide's '05 mark set back in 2004 in the shot put.
• Kaufman, Talal Al Alami M'222, Colin Cianciolo '22 and junior Michael Agard also set a new record in the men's 4x100-meter relay.
• Seniors Caroline Reilly and Rachel Ip, sophomore Angela Hagstrom and Katherine Jacobs '22 recorded the fourth-fastest time in women's program history in the 4x100-meter relay.
SCOUTING THE BABSON WOMEN
• The Beavers return 10 competitors from a team that placed ninth at the NEWMAC Championship meet last April.
• Hagstrom earned All-New England honors by placing seventh in the 400-meter hurdles and teamed with Reilly and Ip to claim all-region honors in the 4x100-meter relay.
• Hagstrom added a sixth-place result in the 400-meter hurdles, Ip placed 11th with a career-best time of 17.07 in the 100-meter hurdles and Reilly came in 12th in the 400 meters at last year's league meet.
• Senior Nicole Johns finished 15th in the 5000 meters and sophomore Jacquelyn Elward recorded a season-best throw in the hammer (86-feet, 10-inches) at the NEWMAC Championships.
SCOUTING THE BABSON MEN
• The Beavers return 20 competitors from a team that recorded the highest point total in program history on the way to finishing fourth at the 2022 NEWMAC Championships.
• Agard finished third at the conference meet and seventh at the regional meet to earn All-New England honors in the long jump, while Rodriguez placed third in the 10,000 meters at the league championship and followed it up with All-New England accolades in the 5000 meters a week later.
• Bottern (shot put) and sophomore Jack Reynolds (high jump) both finished third, Kaufman placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, and graduate student Ryan Wilson (1500 meters) and sophomore Julian Ivarra (10,000 meters) both came in eighth at last year's NEWMAC Championships.
• Sophomore Will Dean also placed eighth in the triple jump, while classmate Reid Dixon finished eighth in the finals of the 100-meter dash at the conference championships.
RETURNING RECORD HOLDERS
• In addition to holding the 4x100-meter relay record with Reilly and Ip, Hagstrom posted the top time in school history (1:00.57) in the 400 meters last April at Tufts.
• Kaufman posted a program-best time of 14.95 at last year's conference meet and boasts the top seven times in Babson history in the 110-meter hurdles entering the 2023 campaign.
• Rodriguez owns the top marks in both the men's 5000 meters (14:55.20) and 10,000 meters (31:04.87), while Bottern recorded school records in the shot put (48-feet, 9.5-inches) and hammer throw (119 feet, 11-inches) last spring.
• Agard owns five of the top six results all-time in the long jump, which includes the top mark of 22-feet, 7-inches set at last year's New England Championships.
NEWMAC COACHES MAKE THEIR PICKS
• Despite back-to-back fourth-place finishes, the Babson men were selected to come in fifth when the NEWMAC preseason coaches' poll was released on Tuesday.
• On the women's side, the Beavers were picked to finish eighth.
NEW CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT FOR 2023
• After competing in a one-day championship dating back to the start of the league in 1998-99, the NEWMAC Championships will take place over two days for the first time this spring.
• MIT will host the men's and women's championships on April 29-30 in Cambridge, Mass.
