No. 15 Men's Soccer Faces Johns Hopkins in NCAA Tournament First Round on Saturday

WHAT TO KNOW

•    The Babson men's soccer team earned one of 22 at-large berths to this year's NCAA Tournament and will travel to Middlebury for the first and second rounds this weekend. 
•    The Beavers will join the third-ranked Panthers, Johns Hopkins and Western New England at South Street Field for matches on Saturday and Sunday.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
NCAA Tournament Appearance: 31st (29th in Division III)

•    Babson (11-3-7) extended its unbeaten streak to 12 games with a 1-1 2OT draw at WPI before fall 3-2 in penalty kicks in the NEWMAC Tournament final last Saturday. 
•    Senior Joseph Cardarapoli scored his first goal of the season in the 26th minute and junior goalkeeper Walker White made a career-high 11 saves for the Beavers, who had senior Louis Gazo and sophomore Joao Arajuo convert penalties. 
•    Graduate student Justin Stone (4-1-9) has three game-winning goals, classmate Sam Morgan (3-3-9) leads the team in assists and the trio of senior Liam Rhatigan (4-0-8), Gazo (3-1-7) and first-year Alexander Yablonovskiy (3-1-7) have combined for eight second-half goals this fall.
•    White has started 20 of 21 games this fall and boasts a 0.55 goals against average and a .894 save percentage to go along with 11 shutouts. 

SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS
NCAA Tournament Appearance: 20th 
Best NCAA Finish: 1994 Division III runner-up

•    Johns Hopkins (12-4-4) is set to make its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 20th overall after knocking off Muhlenberg 1-0 in Saturday's Centennial Conference final. 
•    Logan Falzarano converted a feed from Jackson Shapiro in the 24th minute and Drew Valsamedis made one save for the Blue Jays, who recorded their third consecutive shutout. 
•    Griffin Meyer (12-2-26) leads the team with three game-winning goals, Jonathan Cui (3-3-9) had a goal in the CC semifinal victory over Washington College and the duo of Max Edelstein (2-5-9) and Shapiro (2-4-8) have combined for nine assists this fall. 
•    Valsamedis (8-4-1) has started the last eight matches and owns a 1.31 goals against average and a .730 save percentage to go along with five clean sheets. 

BEAVERS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
•    The 1975, 1979 and 1980 national champions, Babson is making the program's 31st NCAA Tournament appearance and 12th in the last 15 years. 
•    In addition to their three national titles, the Beavers advanced to the national semifinals in both 1977 and 1991 and reached the Sweet 16 in both 2010 and 2011. 
•    The Green and White lost on penalties after playing to a 1-1 2OT draw with Vassar in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. 

FIVE EARN ALL-CONFRENCE HONORS
•    White was selected as the NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Year and five players in all were named to the all-conference squads on Tuesday. 
•    White, Gazo, graduate student Ryan Grund and senior Ryan Kim all earned first-team nods, while senior Samuel Kalishman garnered All-NEWMAC second-team recognition. 

STREAKING BEAVERS
•    Babson enters the NCAA Tournament with a 12-game unbeaten streak (6-0-6) that dates back to its 2-1 win over then-third-ranked Amherst on September 27. 
•    The streak is the program's longest entering the national tournament since 2011 when the Beavers were unbeaten in 18 straight matches. That year they defeated Lesley in the opening round and outlasted Trinity on penalty kicks before falling to Rutgers-Camden in the sectional semifinals. 

SECOND-HALF SCORING SURGE
•    Babson has produced 21 of its 25 goals this season in the second half of games and are outscoring its opponents 21-7 after halftime. 
•    The Beavers have scored 11 times in the 70th minute or later with eighth of those goals coming beyond the 80th minute.

TOUGH TO CRACK
•    The Beavers have conceded just 11 goals this season and second in Division III in team save percentage (.903), sixth in shutout percentage (.619) and ninth in team goals against average (0.52).
•    The Green and White has allowed more than one goal just three times in 21 matches this fall. 

IN A CLASS BY THEMSELVES
•    Babson head coach Jon Anderson '75, Ohio Wesleyan's Jay Martin, Paul McGinlay of Trinity (Texas) and Erick Bauman of Dominican (Ill.) are the only four coaches in this year's tournament field with more than 450 career wins. 
•    Martin is the all-time Division III wins leader with 761, McGinley is seventh with 552 victories, Anderson is fifth among active coaches and 14th all-time with 454 wins and Baumann is right behind him with 451 triumphs. 

TOURNAMENT TESTED
•    White has made four postseason starts and is 2-0-2 with a 0.45 goals against average and has stopped 25 of 27 shots for a .926 save percentage. 
•    In his lone NCAA Tournament start last November against Vassar he made four saves. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    The Beavers are 4-3-2 this season in nine matches against teams that made the NCAA Tournament. 
•    Babson is 6-0-1 on the year when scoring at least two goals and 11-1-6 when conceding one goal or fewer. 
•    The Green and White is unbeaten over its last 38 matches (35-0-3) when scoring the opening goal. 
•    The Beavers are unbeaten over their last eight games away from home (4-0-4) while conceding just three goals. 
•    Babson is 9-2-2 in the month of November going back to 2019.
