Baseball upended by Coast Guard in NEWMAC contest, 4-1

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Sophomore Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Babson College but Coast Guard senior Cody Fidler (Temple, Pa.) allowed just one run while scattering nine hits and a walk in nine innings as the Bears defeated the Beavers, 4-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Nitchman Field.

Coast Guard extended its winning streak to seven games, improving to 12-6 overall and 3-0 in the NEWMAC while Babson dropped its second game in as many days and falls to 11-8 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Senior Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) had a pair of hits for the Beavers and graduate student Alex Reynolds (Hopkinton, Mass.) had a hit and drove in Babson's only run. Seniors Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Jack Pirkl (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) also recorded one hit apiece and sophomore Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) allowed just one earned run in 5.1 innings on the mound, striking out four, but suffered the loss (2-3).

Fidler struck out four batters in his third complete game of the season, improving his record to a NEWMAC-leading 5-0. Junior Greg Boland (Acworth, Ga.) had three hits, including a home run, to lead the Bears' 10-hit attack, while junior Blake Carroll (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) and sophomore John Carroll (Yardley, Pa.) collected two hits each.

Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when first-year Wyatt Duthu (Madison, Ala.) laced a one-out double down the left-field line and later scored on an infield grounder. The Bears added two more runs in the fourth when Boland homered to right and John Carroll singled and scored one batter later following a pair of Babson errors.

Babson got on the board in the top of the seventh when Kiely led off with a double down the left field line and came around to score on Reynolds' single to left. That ended up as the only Beaver run as the visitors stranded eight runners on base in the game, including five in scoring position.

The Bears added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when junior Justin Stasiak (Effort, Pa.) was hit by a pitch and came around to score on singles by senior Nate Nam (Cypress, Calif.) and Blake Carroll.

Junior Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) came on for Spalter in the sixth inning for Babson and allowed one run in 1. 2 innings on two hits and a walk, striking out two. Senior William Cournan (Pembroke, Mass.) worked one inning of scoreless relief, giving up just one hit.

The Beavers will look to bounce back on Saturday with a NEWMAC doubleheader against WPI, beginning at noon at Assumption University. Coast Guard in home again on Saturday with a conference twin bill against Emerson, also at noon.
