Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Graduate student Ryan Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) tallied seven points on four goals and three assists and No. 15/17 MIT finished off a perfect regular season with a 16-12 victory over Babson College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse regular season finale at Henry G. Steinbrenner '27 Stadium.
With the loss, Babson wraps up the regular season at 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC, while MIT, ranked 15th by the US Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and 17th by Inside Lacrosse, heads to the post-season at 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The Engineers will be the top seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament and receive a first-round bye while the Beavers will be the #4 seed and host a quarterfinal game Monday at 7 p.m. at MacDowell Field.
Senior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) led the Beavers with four goals, the fifth time this season he has scored at least four goals in a game. Graduate student Lee Sipes (Windham, N.H.) scored two goals and picked up a team-high five ground balls, first-year Emmett Martin (Milton, Mass.) added two goals and junior Matt Stucchi (Rexford, N.Y.) tallied a goal and three assists. Sophomore Brendan Maher (Melrose, Mass.) caused three turnovers and picked up three ground balls, and first-year Jared Lucich (Point Pleasant, N.J.) came off the bench and won 14 of 21 face-offs.
The Engineers also got three goals and an assist from senior Gavin Vanderberg (Elmhurst, Ill.) and sophomore Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) and three goals from senior Liam Miller (Pasadena, Calif.). First-year Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals, senior Ben Dwyer (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) posted a game-high four caused turnovers, and first-year Matthew Sardis (Bernardsville, N.J.) won 15 of 28 face-offs in the win.
The Beavers got back-to-back goals from Martin and fellow first-year Max Mallett (Alexandria, Va.) less than a minute apart late in the first quarter to give Babson a 2-1 lead, but Nilsen scored for MIT with 13 seconds left in the frame for a 2-2 tie after one. Sophomore Connor Karsh (Glenview, Ill.) scored three minutes into the second quarter to put the Beavers back in front but MIT outscored Babson 5-1 over the final 10 minutes of the stanza, with Gebhardt contributing a goal and three assists, to give the hosts a 7-4 margin at the intermission.
After MIT fired in the first two goals of the third quarter, Price and Stucchi answered with a pair just 26 seconds apart to pull the Beavers back to within three goal at 9-6. Vandenberg and Gebhardt restored the five-goal advantage for the Engineers before Price struck again for Babson late in the third to pull the visitors to within four (11-7) after three.
The Engineers started to pull away on goals by Nilsen and Miller, but Babson did not give up and pumped in three straight by Sipes, Price and Martin, cutting the deficit to 13-10 with six minutes remaining. MIT would not let a perfect season get away, with Nilsen and Miller restoring the five-goal margin (15-10) with 3:44 to play. Late goals by Sipes and first-year Colt Bordonaro (Portland, Ore.) proved too little, too late for the Beavers.
Senior Mac Mowat (Bellevue, Wash.) made 16 saves in goal for the Beavers, while senor Lukas Drexler-Bruce (Denver, Colo.) stopped 13 shots in the win for MIT.
The hosts finished with a 54-44 advantage in shots while Babson had a narrow 26-24 margin in ground balls. Face-offs were pretty even, with MIT winning 16 and Babson 15, and the Beavers were good on 22-of-27 clear attempts and MIT converted 21-of-25.
