Box Score GORHAM, Maine —Sophomore Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine) and junior Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine) each homered and combined for eight runs batted in Sunday afternoon as the University of Southern Maine captured a 9-5 victory over Babson College in a non-conference college baseball game at Ed Flaherty Field.
The Beavers lost for just the second time in their last 13 games, falling to 22-10 overall, while the Huskies improved to 14-16 on the season.
Junior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) reached base three times on two hits and a walk, including his fourth home run of the season and second in as many days, and sophomore Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) and senior Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) also had two hits each for the Beavers. Sophomore Luca Rubin (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a double and drove in two runs and Yellen and junior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) finished with one RBI apiece in the setback.
Seymour went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and five RBI for the Huskies and Pike was 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in the win. Junior Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vt.) also had three hits, including a triple, knocked in a run and scored four times for the winners.
USM got on the board in the first inning when Vesosky tripled and scored on a base hit by Seyour, and added three runs in the bottom of the third on Pike's three-run blast over the right-field fence. The Beavers responded with four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game; Manning led off with a homer to right, and after singles by Santos and Yellen and junior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Santos scored on a fielder's choice by Cook and Rubin delivered a two-run double to left.
The Huskies came right back with three more runs in the bottom of fourth to take the lead for good. Vesosky hit an RBI single through the left side and Seymour followed with a two-run double to left. USM tacked on two more in the sixth when Vesosky was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Seymour followed with a two-run blast to center to make it 9-4.
Babson got one more run in the seventh on Yellen's RBI single to right, but USM closed out the win without any further damage.
Sophomore Matt Burnett (Ellsworth, Maine) pitched 5.2 innings for USM and allowed four runs on seven hits, striking out four, to record the win (3-0). Seymour came on to get the final two outs in the ninth for his second save. Senior Riley Teevens (Milton, Mass.) started and took the loss (0-1) for Babson, surrendering seven runs in 3.1 innings, fanning five. Sophomore Kyle Wolff (Stratham, N.H.) and graduate student Truman Devitt (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) each pitched one scoreless inning of relief.
Babson returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. game at Clark in Worcester, Mass. USM plays consecutive non-conference games Monday through Wednesday against in-state NESCAC foes against Bowdoin, Colby and Bates.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 7-12-1 all-time against the Huskies in a series that dates back to 2000.
• Babson finished with 10 hits and lost for just the fourth time in 19 games this season when recording double-digit hits.
• Yellen extended his hitting streak to seven games with his 12th multi-hit outing of the season, the most on the team.
