Baseball too strong for Johnson & Wales, 12-6

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs and Babson College scored in double digits for the fourth time in the last five games with a 12-6 victory over Johnson & Wales University Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game at Govoni Field.

The Beavers extended their win streak to nine games and improved to 20-8 overall, while the Wildcats had a two-game win streak stopped and slid to 10-20 on the spring.

Sophomore Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) had a double and a triple, knocked in three runs and scored three times for the Beavers as nine players accounted for 14 hits. First-year Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) collected two hits and an RBI, graduate student Alex Reynolds (Hopkinton, Mass.) had a single and two RBI, and sophomore Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) came off the bench with an RBI double.

Seven different players had two hits each for the Wildcats, who collected double-digit hits for the fourth time in the last five games. Junior Miles Kelly (East Setauket, N.Y.) hit a pair of doubles and knocked in two, classmate Griffin Snyder (Marietta, Ga.) had a double and a single and drove in a pair, and sophomore Riley Hasson (South Portland, Maine) and first-year Gus Lappin (South Portland, Maine) each had two hits and one RBI.

After scoring one run in the first inning on an RBI single by first-year Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.), the Beavers erupted for five runs in the second. They loaded the bases with no outs on singles by Manning and senior Jack Pirkl (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) sandwiched around a walk by sophomore Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.), and Santos hammered a three-run double to right center. Junior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) and Sadowsky followed with RBI singles to make it a 6-0 game.

JWU cut the deficit in half with three runs in the top of the third. Snyder delivered a two-run double to left center and Kelly followed with an RBI double to right center.

Babson put three more runs on the board in the fourth inning. Reynolds hit a bases-loaded single up the middle to score two runs and Manning singled through the left side to bring home another.

The Wildcats stayed within striking distance with another three-run inning in the sixth. Lappin singled home classmate Cody Pfeifer (Merrimack, N.H.), who had led off with a double to center, and Hasson added an RBI single to left. Another run scored on a double to deep center field by Kelly that nearly went over the fence off the center fielder's glove but Snyder was gunned down at home plate trying to score from first on the play.

The Beavers added some breathing room with two more in the sixth inning when Kiely hit an RBI double to left and came around to score on Manning's single to center. One more run came home in the seventh inning when Santos tripled to left field and scored on a JWU infield error.

Graduate student Truman Devitt (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) earned the win (2-1) in relief for Babson with one inning of scoreless relief. Senior John Macdonald (Quincy, Mass.) closed out the win with two impressive innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Babson returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action this weekend with a three-game series against MIT, with first pitch for a single game Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass., followed by a doubleheader Saturday at noon at Govoni Field. JWU returns home for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) twin bill Saturday at noon against Albertus Magnus.
