Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts and seven different players drove in a run to help Babson College defeat visiting Emerson College, 10-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Friday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its fifth straight win, Babson improves to 16-8 overall and 6-1 in league play, while Emerson slips to 9-13 overall 2-5 in the NEWMAC.
Senior Josh Yellen (Bloomfield, Hills, Mich.) homered, walked twice and scored twice, classmate Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) doubled and drove in a run, and sophomore Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) walked three times and scored twice for the Beavers. Junior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and St. John allowed two earned runs on eight hits over 7.2 innings to improve to 4-0 on the year.
First-year Briggs Loveland (Burleson, Texas) went 2-for-4 with a pair of double and an RBI, senior Lou Davolio (Worcester, Mass.) was 3-for-4 with a double and classmates Calvin Jacey (Mystic, Conn.) and Rory Tettemer (Westfield, Mass.) both doubled and finished with two hits to lead the Lions. Senior Johnny Maffei (Hingham, Mass.) was chased after giving up seven earned runs on three hits and four walks in just 2.2 innings and is now 1-2 on the year.
The Green and White got off to a fast start with three runs in the bottom of the first as Lapham doubled to right center and Santos and Yellen both walked to load the bases with nobody out. Lapham scored on an RBI ground out by junior Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Maine), Santos raced home thanks to an error on a double steal and senior Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, N.J.) brought home Kiely with another RBI ground out to make it 3-0.
Babson broke the game open with a four-run third inning that included just one hit to go along with five walks and a hit batsman. Santos walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by first-year Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.), Kelly drove in Yellen with an RBI single to left and senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) and Lapham both walked with the bases loaded to extend the margin to 7-0.
The Beavers tacked on two more runs without the benefit of a hit in the fifth as Kelly walked and later scored on a double steal, while Pirkl reached on a fielder's choice and came home on a two-out error to push the Babson lead to 9-0. Emerson broke up the shutout bid with a two-out rally in the eighth as Loveland drove in Tettemer with a double to right and junior Matt Nachamie (Merrick, N.Y.) followed with a two-run single to right two batters later to pull within 9-3.
Yellen homered to center with one out in the bottom of the eighth for the Beavers.
The teams will continue their series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass.
