SERIES HISTORY
• Babson and Springfield will meet for the 40th time on Saturday in a series that dates back to the 1970s.
• The Beavers are just 5-34 all-time against the Pride but have won three straight regular season matchups between the teams.
LAST MEETING
• Senior Peter Chisholm scored a game-high four goals and John Antaya '21 recorded a career-high six caused turnovers as Babson defeated visiting Springfield, 15-5, on April 24, 2021 at MacDowell Field, clinching a share of its second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title since 2018.
• Sean Smith '21G finished with two goals and one assist and Mason O'Hanlon '21 and Alex Lesher '21 each scored twice for the Beavers. Senior Ryan Donovan scored once to go along with a game-high three assists in the win. Senior Drew Thomas led all players with nine ground balls and sophomore Grey Sunderland won 11-of-23 face-offs and scooped up eight ground balls for Babson. Senior Mac Mowat made a season-high eight saves in goal.
• Junior Riley Burgmyer scored twice and senior Zac Shuette dished out two assists for the Pride. Noah Rouleau '21 won 8-of-13 face-offs and scooped up five ground balls, while sophomore Jack Hamilton stopped eight shots in the loss.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (4-3, 1-1 NEWMAC), which is receiving votes in this week's US Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III poll, is coming off a dramatic 11-10 loss to No. 11 Bowdoin Wednesday evening at MacDowell Field.
• Sophomore Jacob Tauss scored three times, classmate Connor Karsh had two goals and graduate student Lee Sipes chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Sunderland won 14-of-25 face-offs and scooped up eight ground balls, first-year Hayden Bean had two caused turnovers and senior Austin O'Brien made 11 saves in his first career start.
• The Beavers, which allowed double-digit goals for the first time this season, held the Polar Bears to a season-low 11 goals which is more than six below their season average.
• Sipes (12-4-16), junior Matt Stucchi (10-4-14) and Price (9-4-13) lead the team in scoring. Sunderland has won 68-of-117 face-offs and leads the team with 36 ground balls. Thomas (10 caused turnovers, 15 GB) and junior Kyle Sanborn (9 CT, 19 GB) are the top long-pole defenders.
• Mowat (.615 sv. pct., 7.03 GAA) ranks 12th in Division III in goals against average and 32nd in save percentage.
SCOUTING THE PRIDE
• Springfield (3-6, 1-1 NEWMAC) will be out to stop a two-game losing skid after falling to Middlebury on Tuesday, 12-6.
• First-year Dean Pesce got his first start in goal and made 20 saves for the Pride. Junior Steven Betsch went 13-for-22 from the face-off "X" and snagged nine ground balls, while senior Connor Roberts grabbed five ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. In a relatively clean game where there were no penalties, MIddlebury held a slight 48-41 edge in shots.
• Junior Mason Nocito paced the Pride with two goals and an assist, while Burgmyer tallied one goal and set up another. Betsch, Roberts, and senior Zach Schuette also scored once each in the setback.
• Schuette (28-16-44) leads Springfield and ranks 29th in Division III in points per game. Burgmyer (16-10-26), graduate student Joe Maimone (14-7-21) and senior Chris Santa Barbara (14-7-21) are also offensive threats. Sophomore Jack Hamilton (.497 sv. pct., 14.42 GAA) has started eight games in goal.
BABSON IN THE NCAA RANKINGS
• Babson ranks 32nd out of 244 schools in Division III in scoring defense, allowing just 8.14 goals per game, and is also 24th in clearing percentage (.870).
BEAVER BITES
• Babson was successful on 21-of-23 clearing opportunities against Bowdoin and has converted 92.2 percent of its clears (95-for-103) over the last four games.
• The Green and White are 3-0 this spring and have won 10 of their last 11 dating back to the start of the 2019 season when winning more face-offs than its opponents.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
• Stucchi has scored at least one point in all seven games this spring and has four multi-point outings. Price has a six-game point streak going with four multi-point performances.
• The Beavers are 4-1 this season when scoring at least 10 goals, and are 11-1 going back to the start of the 2020 campaign.
• Babson is also 4-1 this season when holding the opponent to eight goals or fewer, and 23-3 going back to the start of 2018.
