Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Garret Roberts (Stratham, N.H.) and first-year Harry Painter (Essex, Mass.) both homered to help visiting Suffolk University defeat Babson College, 7-1, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
Babson, which had its five-game winning streak snapped, drops to 9-5 overall, while Suffolk improves to 9-5 with its sixth victory in its last eight outings.
Senior Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) singled twice and classmate Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks for the Beavers, who were limited to just six hits on the day. Sophomore Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out eight over 6.0 innings and dropped to 2-1 on the year with the loss.
Sophomore Joe Ward (Saugus, Mass.) doubled twice and drove in two runs, while Roberts and graduate student Christian Seariac (Framingham, Mass.) both finished with two hits to pace the Rams. Senior Michael Muscarella (Melrose, Mass.) picked up his first win after allowing just one run on five hits over 5.0 innings. Senior Casey Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) and junior George Breslin (Milton, Mass.) combined to throw four shutout innings of relief for Suffolk.
Spalter escaped a bases loaded jam with no outs in the second by allowing just one run and Babson pulled even in the fifth when junior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) led off with an infield single and later scored on senior Sean Burychka's (Mount Laurel, N.J.) RBI knock to left.
Babson had a chance for more but left the bases loaded and the Rams took advantage, going in front for good on Robert's lead-off homer to right to start the sixth. They extended their lead later in the frame as Ward doubled and scored on an RBI single by junior Luke Harder (Liverpool, N.Y.), and Painter made it 5-1 with a two-run blast to right center in the eighth. Ward drove in two more runs with his second double of the afternoon with two outs in the ninth.
Both teams return to action on Thursday as Babson travels to Roger Williams at 3:30 p.m., while Suffolk takes on Johnson & Wales at 4 p.m.
