Senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) doubled, scored twice and drove in two, while sophomore Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Salem State jumped on top 3-1 in the bottom of the first and stretch its lead to 6-1 in the last of the third thanks to a two-run double by sophomore Jack Sefrino (Dartmouth, Mass.) and an RBI single by first-year Bobby Jellison (Salem, Mass.). Junior Brock Pare (Lowell, Mass.) had retired eight straight batters entering the top of the fifth before running into trouble. Junior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) led off with a walk, Savage singled to left and Pirkl followed with a two-run double to cut the Beavers' deficit to 6-3.
Lapham singled to left to put runners on the corners and Pirkl scored on Burychka's ground out to make it a two-run game. Pare retired the side in order in the sixth before the Green and White took the lead for good with a four-run seventh. Burychka tied the game with a one-out bases-loaded double to center and Cook followed with a two-out two-run single to center two batters later to give the visitors an 8-6 lead.
Junior Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) allowed five earned runs in 2.1 innings, but the Babson bullpen was superb as five pitchers combined to throw 6.2 shutout innings while striking out seven and giving up just four hits. Senior Nate Carpenter (Groveland, Mass.) went 2.2 innings to get the Beavers through the fifth, graduate student Truman Devitt (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) earned the win to improve to 1-1 with a perfect sixth, and junior Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) struck out the side after giving up a leadoff single in the ninth for his fourth save.
Pare gave up six runs on six hits while striking out four in 6.1 innings before giving way to sophomore Greg Gentle (Arlington, Mass.), who allowed three runs in 2.2 innings of work to slip to 1-1 on the year with the loss.
Game 2: Babson 7, Salem State 1
Cook hit a two-run homer, Lapham finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and senior Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI to pace the Beavers' 13-hit attack. Noone (2-1) tossed six shutout frames allowing just three hits and recording a career-high eight strikeouts, while first-year Griffin Cofsky (Walpole, Mass.) fanned three over the final three innings to earn his first career save.
Babson stranded runners on base in each of the first two innings before jumping on top in the third as Burychka tripled to center to bring home Lapham before scoring on Yellen's RBI ground out for a 2-0 lead. Lapham and Yellen produced RBI singles, Pirkl raced home on a well-executed double steal with runners on the corners, and Cook capped the five-run rally with a two-run homer to center to push the Beavers' advantage to 7-0 in the fifth.
Salem State put runners on first and second twice over the first four innings but was unable to capitalize. Noone recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the second and used a punch out followed by a pop-up to second and a fly ball to center to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard in the fourth.
Sefrino (1-2) suffered the loss for the Vikings after giving up seven runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings.
