Men's Lacrosse Doubles Up Clark in NEWMAC Triumph, 14-7

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass.— Junior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) scored four goals and Babson used a five-goal third-quarter surge to pull away from Clark University on the way to a 14-7 victory over the Cougars in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse match-up Saturday afternoon at Granger Field.

With the win, Babson improves to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC, while Clark drops to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

The Beavers also got two goals and an assist from graduate student Lee Sipes (Windham, N.H.) and two goals each from sophomores Ford Carney (Garden City, N.Y.) and Connor Karsh (Glenview, Ill.). Juniors Tyler Hughey (Beverly, Mass.) and Dan Neill (Black Earth, Wis.) and sophomores Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) and Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.) all scored one goal and Sunderland won 14 of 20 face-offs and picked up a team-high eight ground balls.

Senior Benjamin Hollerbach (West Hartford, Conn.) led the hosts with two goals and an assist, while classmate Steve Caione (Wingdale, N.Y.) scored twice and senior Tommy McCarthy (York, Maine) and first-year Matt Wells (Rutland, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist each. Junior John D'Eufemia (Salisbury, Mass.) also scored for the Cougars, and sophomore Byron Palmieri (Guilford, Conn.) scooped up a team-high five ground balls.

Babson jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter on an unassisted goal by Carney and man-up markers by Sipes and Hughey. After Hollerbach scored a man-down goal for Clark to cut the deficit to 3-2, Price went back-to-back for the Beavers, the second one coming with eight seconds left in the quarter, to put Babson up 5-2 after one.

After a scoreless second quarter, Clark opened the third with consecutive goals by McCarthy and Hollerbach to pull to within one at 5-4. The Beaver offense ramped up and fired in five unanswered goals, including three in a row in a 33-second span by Neill, Sunderland and Sipes and back-to-back scores by Karsh. Wells stopped the bleeding for Clark with a man-up goal late in the third, but Bower got that one right back with 32 seconds remaining in the frame to make it an 11-5 Beaver lead after three.

Caione scored for the Cougars to open the fourth quarter, but Ford answered that for Babson a minute and a half later. D'Eufemia put in Clark's final goal midway through the quarter, and Price sealed the win with a pair of goals 40 seconds apart in the final three minutes.

Babson finished with a 46-34 advantage in shots and 32-30 margin in ground balls while winning 15-of-23 face-offs. Senior Mac Mowat (Bellevue, Wash.) earned the win in goal for Babson, making four saves in 45 minutes of action while junior Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made five saves on eight shot in 12-and-a-half minutes off the bench.

Babson returns home for tough a non-conference clash on Wednesday against No. 19 Bowdoin at 7 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Clark visits Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. matchup.

GAME NOTES
• Babson is 22-3 all-time against Clark in a series that dates back to 1994.
• The Beavers have held all six of their opponent this spring to single-digit scoring, and have limited 11 of their last 12 opponents to nine or fewer goals going back to last season.
• Babson is 3-0 this spring and has won 10 of its last 11 dating back to the start of the 2019 season when winning more face-offs than its opponents.
• Saturday's game was tabbed as the fifth annual Renny Classic, which started in 2016 when Cougars' alum Whit Merritt '18 wanted to support his father Renny who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Clark wore purple uniforms in support of the cause.
