Six-Run Ninth lifts Baseball Past No. 15 Denison in Florida Finale, 10-5

Box Score

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.— Sophomore Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) hit a two-run double to left field to highlight a six-run ninth inning as Babson College defeated No. 15 Denison University, 10-5, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon to wrap up the Beavers' week in the Snowbird Classic.

With the win, Babson finishes the Florida trip with a 3-2 record and improves to 5-4 overall, while Denison had a three-game winning streak snapped and wraps up its week at 4-2, dropping to 7-2 overall. The Beavers also avenged a 7-1 loss to the Big Red on Tuesday.

Kiely finished the game with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI, while senior Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) also collected three hits and drove in a run to lead the Beavers. Classmate Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, N.J.) had a double and a walk in four trips to the plate, driving in two, and sophomore Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) also drove in a run in the win.

Junior Charlie Glennon (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had three hits, including a double, and knocked in a run for the Big Red, while junior Ari Fierer (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Noah Leib (Evanston, Ill.) each finished with two hits and an RBI.

Babson took the first of its four leads in the second inning when Kiely singled and came around to score on three consecutive wild pitches. Denison answered with a run in the third on a single by first-year Eric Colaco (Richfield, Ohio) and an RBI double by Fierer.

The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, as singles by junior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.), Dembowski and Santos plated a go-ahead run for Babson, and an RBI hit to right by Leib tied it a 2-2.

The squads exchanged two runs each in the eighth inning. Senior Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) was hit by a pitch for Babson with one out, Kiely followed with a single up the middle and both runners came home on an RBI double by Burychka. Denison answered with an RBI single by senior Daniel Spencer (Northbrook, Ill.) and a sacrifice fly by first-year Matt McClements (Columbus, Ohio).

Senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) singled and Dembowski walked to start Babson's ninth-inning rally. After a wild pitch and an intentional walk to Yellen loaded the bases, Kiely laced a double down the left field line to score two runs. Burychka was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, and a single by Lapham and an infield error by Denison ended up scoring three Beaver runs. Lapham wound up on third base and then scored the final run on a wild pitch.

Denison scored once in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out RBI double by Glennon, but junior Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) closed out the game for the Beavers, earning his first win of the season (1-1).

Sophomore Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) started and went four innings for Babson, allowing two runs and striking out two. Junior Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) had an impressive relief performance, working three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five, and McLendon pitched the last two innings, surrendering one run on two hits and fanning one.

Denison used eight pitchers in the game, with sophomore George Viebrock (Bethel, Conn.) and first-year Manny Nager (Gates Hills, Ohio) throwing back-to-back impressive three-inning stints, combining to give up just one run one five hits and striking out six. Junior Patrick Neenan (Chicago, Ill.) suffered the loss after getting tagged for four runs (three earned) in the ninth.
