Baseball Defeated in Rematch Against Wooster, 19-8

Box Score

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.—The College of Wooster erupted for 19 hits, including 10 for extra bases, as the Fighting Scots avenged a loss to Babson College two days ago with a 19-8 victory over the Beavers Wednesday afternoon in the Snowbird Baseball Classic.

With the loss, Babson dropped its second in a row to even its record at 4-4 on the year. Wooster won its second straight and fifth of its last six to improve to 5-2 overall. The Beavers had defeated the Fighting Scots, 5-4 in 11 innings on Monday.

The Babson offense produced eight runs on 10 hits of its own. Senior Andrew Dembowski (Danvers, Mass.) and sophomore Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) each had two hits and an RBI, and graduate student Alex Reynolds (Hopkinton, Mass.) slammed a pinch-hit two-run home run. Senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) and junior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) also had RBI hits, and senior Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) had a hit and scored two runs.

Junior Dane Camphausen (McLean, Va.) clouted two home runs and knocked in six for the Fighting Scots, and senior Ben Gbur (Hilliard, Ohio) had a pair of doubles, a home run and three RBI. Senior Tyler Chumita (Hilliard, Ohio) had a triple and drove in four runs, and first-year Nick Pett (Perrysburg, Ohio) rapped three hits and drove in three in the victory.

Wooster jumped on top 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by junior Dean Brown (Kensington, Md.) and a two-run homer to center field by Camphausen. The Beavers got two of the runs back in the top of the second on RBI singles by Manning and Pirkl, but the Fighting Scots started to pull away with one in the third on a sacrifice fly by Chumita, and tacked on three more in the fifth on a two-run blast by Gbur and an RBI single by Brown.

Babson scored twice in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-4, as Kiely doubled in a run and then Lapham scored on a passed ball. The Fighting Scots erupted for six runs in the bottom of the sixth and four more in the seventh to take a commanding lead. Camphausen capped the six-run rally in the sixth with a grand slam to center field, and Chumita finished off the seventh-inning rally with a three-run blast to right.

The Beavers continued to put runs on the board with two in the eighth inning and two in the ninth. Junior Michael O'Brien (Medford, Mass.) led off the eighth with a walk and later scored on a passed ball, and Dembowski brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. Reynolds accounted for the final two Babson runs in the ninth, going deep to center field after junior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) had walked.

Sophomore Corey Knauf (Vienna, Va.) started for Wooster and worked five inning to pick up the win (1-0), allowing three earned runs and striking out three. Graduate student Truman Devitt (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) started for Babson and pitched into the fifth inning, allowing five runs and fanning three and took the loss (0-1).

Babson will play its second game in three days against No. 15 Denison on Thursday at 10 a.m. to wrap up the Florida trip. The Beavers will be looking to avenge a 7-1 loss to the Big Red on Tuesday.
