Baseball Rallies to Top Wooster in 11 Innings, 5-4

Box Score

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.—First-year Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) tied the game with a two-out single in the sixth inning and raced home to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th as Babson College rallied to defeat the College of Wooster, 5-4, in non-conference baseball action on Monday afternoon.

With its second consecutive win, Babson improves to 4-2 on the year. Wooster, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, is now 3-2 overall.

Sadowsky went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored in his collegiate debut and graduate student Alex Reynolds (Hopkinton, Mass.) singled twice and drove in a run for the Beavers. Junior Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) worked two innings out of the bullpen to earn the win improving to 2-0 on the year as five relief pitchers combined to hold the Scots scoreless over 6.2 innings.

Senior Ben Gbur (Hilliard, Ohio) went 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI, while juniors Dean Brown (Kensington, Md.) and Dane Camphausen (McLean, Va.) finished with two hits apiece for Wooster. Gbur, who came on in relief in the eighth inning, suffered the loss to drop to 0-1 after striking out three and walking two over three frames.

The Scots went in front 1-0 on senior Alex Gasper's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) two-out double to center in the top of the second, but the green and White responded with a pair of runs thanks to back-to-back RBI singles by Sadowsky and Reynolds. Gbur's double to deep center brought home seniors Michael Thomas (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Dominic Stilliana (Youngstown, Ohio) with one out in the fifth to make it 3-2, and classmate Ben Hines (Farmington, Minn.) followed with an RBI knock to left to make it a two-run game one batter later.

The Beavers pulled even in the last of the sixth as seniors Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, N.J.) reached with consecutive singles and moved into scoring position on a ground out by sophomore Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) before coming in to make it 4-4 on Sadowsky's two-out, two-strike single to left.

Senior William Cournan (Pembroke, Mass.) worked around back-to-back singles by Wooster in the top of the eighth and junior Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) retired the side after issuing a leadoff walk in the ninth. The Scots also had runners on first and second in the 10th but Person got a ground ball to third to end the threat.

Gbur set down the first nine Babson hitters he faced before issuing a leadoff walk to Sadowsky in the 11th. Sophomore Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Mass.) moved Sadowsky to second with a sacrifice bunt and junior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) reached on an error to put runners on the corners with one out. Senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) was intentionally walked to load the bases and classmate Andrew Dembowski's (Danvers, Mass.) hot shot to the shortstop was misplayed allowing Sadowsky to score the decisive run.

Junior Tim Noone (Needham, Mass.) allowed four runs on six hits to go along with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work for the Beavers, while sophomore Eli Westrick (Ashland, Ore.) earned a no-decision for Wooster after giving up four runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it takes on No. 22 Denison at 11 a.m.
