Box Score PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.— Junior Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) allowed just two runs over seven innings and senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Babson College baseball team came back to edge Baldwin Wallace University, 3-2, Sunday afternoon for its first victory in the Snowbird Classic.
With the victory, Babson improves to 3-2 on the young season while Baldwin Wallace suffered its first loss of the season, dropping to 10-1 this spring and winding up its week in Florida at 6-1.
St. John scattered seven singles and a walk over his seven innings, striking out one. After getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, he retired nine straight batters and allowed just two singles over the next over the next four innings.
Senior Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, N.J.) led a 10-hit Babson attack with three hits and senior Andrew Dembowski (Danvers, Mass.) reached base four times with two hits and two walks. Senior Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) had a hit and drove in a run.
Senior Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) had two hits to lead the Yellow Jackets, and junior Ryan Guggenheim (Solon, Ohio) and sophomore Mark Mohnickey, Jr. (North Ridgeville, Ohio) each knocked in runs.
BW got on the board in the second inning as senior Bijan Kamalipour (Firsco, Texas) singled, went to second on a hit batter, and scored on an infield hit. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the third when Guggenheim hit an RBI single to left but couldn't capitalize further in the inning, leaving the bases loaded.
Babson got one run back in the fifth inning when Dembowski walked, stole second and came home of Yellen's single to center. The Beavers put their first two hitters on base in the eighth inning when sophomore Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) led off with a pinch-hit single to center and classmate Jack Julian (Manchester Mass.) was hit by a pitch. After a sac bunt by junior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) advanced the runners, Pirkl brought them home with a two-run bloop single to left for the 3-2 lead.
Junior Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) worked a scoreless eighth inning and recorded his first career victory, and classmate Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to record his third save.
The Beavers are back in action Monday when they take on against Wooster, beginning at 12 p.m.

• Babson is 2-0 all-time against Baldwin Wallace, which includes a ninth-inning 6-5 victory on March 4, 2018.
