Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas— Senior Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) had two hits, two stolen bases and knocked in a pair and junior right-hander Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) allowed just two runs over seven innings as Babson College defeated 15th-ranked Trinity University, 4-2, in non-conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at the Trinity Baseball Field.
With the victory, Babson earned its second win in the three-game series to improve to 2-1 overall while Trinity dropped to 3-3 on the season.
St. John scattered four hits and two walks over seven innings to post his first win of the season (1-0) for the Beavers. Graduate student Truman Devitt (Mamaroneck, NY.) and junior Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) each pitched a perfect inning of relief to secure the win, with McLendon picking up his second save.
Juniors Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) and Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) and senior Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, N.J.) all hit doubles in Babson's nine-hit attack. Seniors Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.), junior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.), and grad student Alex Reynolds (Hopkinton, Mass.) also collected hits as eight of the nine hitters in the Beaver line-up reached base with a hit.
Junior Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas) had two hits, including a double, and classmate Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.) had one hit and knocked in a pair to lead the Tigers. Junior MJ Metz (San Diego, Calif.) also had a double and scored a run. Junior starter Samuel Conte (Boston, Mass.) went five innings and allowed just three earned runs on six hits while striking out seven but suffered the loss (0-1).
Babson plated a run in the first inning when Lapham singled, stole second and came around to score on a Tiger error. The Beavers extended their lead in the second inning when Reynolds led off with a single, Manning doubled to right center, and Lapham hit a two-run single to center.
Trinity got on the board in the fourth inning when Metz laced a double down the left field line, Gore singled to right and Schaub brought both runners home with a single to right center.
The Beavers added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Burychka doubled to left center, went to third on a sac bunt and scored on a wild pitch. Babson's pitching and defense did the rest, including a seventh-inning double play, holding off the Tigers to preserve the win.
Babson returns to New England and will take on Brandeis on Saturday at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass., beginning at noon.
