Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y.— Seniors Hayden Fry (Sudbury, Mass.) and Kieran McGovern (Wilton, Conn.) scored two goals each Sunday afternoon as No. 13/12 Union College defeated Babson College, 8-4, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game at Frank Bailey Field.
The loss was the first of the season for Babson (2-1) while Union, ranked 13th in the USILA Division III poll and 12th in the Inside Lacrosse Division III rankings, won its season opener (1-0).
Sophomore Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) scored two goals to lead the Beavers, while junior Matt Stucchi (Rexford, N.Y.) and sophomore Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.) notched one goal each and junior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) added one assist. Senior Drew Thomas (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) led the team with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, and senior Mac Mowat (Bellevue, Wash.) was solid in goal with 12 saves in the setback.
Sophomore Jake Mabardy (Winchester, Mass.) also scored two goals for the Dutchmen, and Fry topped the team with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Peter Burnes (Natick, Mass.) and sophomore Justin Greene (Norwell, Mass.) added one goal apiece, and senior Sam Byrne (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Matthew Paolatto (Sudbury, Mass.) combined to win 8-of-13 face-offs. Sophomore Dan Donohue (Weston, Mass.) made 11 saves on 15 shots to earn the win in the Dutchmen goal.
Union scored three unanswered goals in the first quarter as Frey opened the scoring five minutes in with an assist from McGovern, Burnes put one in three minutes later, and Frey added his second of the game with 19 seconds left in the frame.
Tauss broke through with a goal for Babson two and a half minutes into the second quarter, but Greene made it 4-1 with six minutes left in the half and Mabardy just beat the final horn with his first goal to make it 5-1 at the intermission.
After nine minutes of scoreless play in the third quarter, Stucchi fired in a man-up goal for Babson with 5:48 on the clock, assisted by Price, and Tauss added his second goal with 3:42 on the clock to cut the margin to 5-3. The Dutchmen came back with two of their own, with McGovern scoring late in the third quarter and Mabardy adding his second of the game in the first minute of the fourth quarter to restore Union's four-goal lead (7-3).
Barlow tacked on a goal for Babson with 9:35 remaining and McGovern rounded out the scoring for Union with less than two minutes remaining.
The Dutchmen finished with a 49-27 advantage in shots and a 31-19 margin in ground balls. Union was 21-of-23 on clear attempts while holding Babson to 16-of-22.
The Beavers return to action on Saturday March 12, with a non-conference game at Endicott at 3 p.m. Union also plays at Endicott in its next game on Wednesday, March 2 at 4 p.m.

• Babson is 0-13 all-time against Union in a series that dates back to 2009.
• The Beavers have been held to eight goals or fewer in five of the six losses in Schenectady.
• Union held Babson to its lowest scoring output since an 8-4 loss to Rensselaer on March 10, 2018, a streak of 43 games.
