Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Anna Scott (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored the only goal of the game late in the third quarter and fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University held on to defeat seventh-ranked Babson College, 1-0, in an NCAA Field Hockey Tournament quarterfinal on a rainy Sunday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
Babson, which had its 15-game winning streak snapped, ends the season at 19-4. Johns Hopkins (18-3) won its 15th in a row and advances to the national semifinals for the fourth straight year.
Sophomore goalie Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) finished with three saves for the Beavers, who were blanked for just the second time this season.
Senior Olivia Fox (Los Gatos, Calif.) assisted on the game-winning goal for the Blue Jays. Junior goalie Alexis Loder (North East, Md.) made two first-quarter saves to post her third and the team's 15th shutout of the season.
The Blue Jays scored the game-winner off a penalty corner. Fox took the insert and sent a pass to Scott on the left side of the perimeter, and Scott's shot deflected off a Babson defender and bounced past Furmanek into the right side of the goal. It was the Blue Jay defender's first goal of the season.
The game was a defensive battle the whole way. Graduate student Abby Birk (Louisville, Ky.) had a good opportunity for the visitors early following a penalty corner but her blast went wide right, and Babson put two shots on goal in the first quarter that were stopped by Loder.
Johns Hopkins had the only shot in the second frame but Birk's shot after the second of two straight corners in the final two minutes went wide.
Furmanek stepped up to deny Fox's shot in the third quarter from the middle of the circle, and junior Mikayla Schoff (McLean, Va.) hammered a shot wide on the ensuing corner. Babson senior Claire Nichols (St. Louis, Mo.) raced back to stop a breakaway by first-year Grace Waldeck (Concord, Mass.) in the 43rd minute to keep the game scoreless.
After the Blue Jays pulled ahead late in the third, Furmanek made two key saves in the fourth quarter to keep it a one-goal game. She made a quick reaction stop on a shot by senior Tessa Erickson (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) in front off a rebound of a blocked shot by Fox, and added another pad save in the final minute to deny Birk on a shot from the middle of the circle.
Hopkins finished with an 11-3 margin in shots, including 10-0 over the final three quarters after Babson took three of the four first-quarter shots. The Blue Jays took 14 of the game's 19 penalty corners.
The Blue Jays will take on eighth-ranked Williams in the national semifinals on Friday, November 18, as the Ephs upset top-ranked and undefeated Salisbury on Sunday afternoon.
