No. 9 Field Hockey Nips WPI in Matchup of Conference Unbeatens, 1-0

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass.—Sophomore Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) scored 48 seconds into the second quarter to help No. 9 Babson College defeat WPI, 1-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Tuesday afternoon at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

With its third straight victory, Babson improves to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in league play. WPI slips to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC with the loss.

Sophomore Camille Marsh (Englewood, Colo.) chipped in with an assist and classmate Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made five of her six saves in the second half to record her second consecutive shutout for the Beavers.

First-year Eve Martineau (Greene, Maine) had a defensive save and senior Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished with seven saves in the loss for the Engineers.

Following a scoreless first quarter that saw Martineau sweep away senior Brianne McGrath's (Newmarket, Ontario) shot through traffic following a penalty corner, Evans put the Green and White in front less than a minute into the second. She took a pass from Marsh just outside the circle and hit a rocket inside the left post for her fifth goal of the year.

Furmanek made back-to-back stops on WPI junior Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, Mass.) less than six minutes into the third and came up with consecutive saves on Martineau and sophomore Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, Vt.) following a penalty corner with just over nine minutes remaining in the fourth. Her final save of the contest came with 6:36 to go as she stepped off her line to make a kick save on Meinhold's blast from the top of the circle following another corner.

The Beavers finished with a 14-9 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Springfield at 12 p.m., while WPI travels to Keene State at 1:30 p.m.
