Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Kerry Lyne (Wellesley, Mass.) scored five times and 11th-ranked Union College used a six-goal run that spanned halftime on the way to defeating Babson College, 15-7, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday at MacDowell Field.
Babson suffered its first loss of the year to fall to 2-1, while Union improves to 2-0 with the win.
Junior Mason O'Hanlon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) scored twice and senior Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.), classmate Matthew MacCune (Braintree, Mass.) and junior Lee Sipes (Windham, N.H.) all finished with a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Junior Jack Tague (Fairfield, Mass.) and sophomore Drew Thomas (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) combined to pick up seven ground balls in addition to recording three caused turnovers apiece, while senior goalie Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) stopped 11 shots in the loss.
Junior Hayden Frey (Sudbury, Mass.) had three goals, senior Michael Sands (Greenwich, Conn.) scored twice and sophomore Brian Davis (Deerfield, Mass.) contributed a goal and three assists for the Dutchmen. Senior Patrick Regan (Baltimore, Md.) won 15-of-25 and led all players with seven ground balls, while classmate Graham Goldheim (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) stopped seven shots in 57 minutes of action.
The Green and White started fast getting goals from MacCune, sophomore Ethan Carpenter (Orlando, Fla.) and O'Hanlon to build a 3-0 lead with 4:25 to go in the opening period. The lead was short-lived, however, as Lyne exploded for four second-quarter goals, including the final two of the stanza to give Union a 5-4 lead at the break.
Frey and Sands scored over the first 63 seconds of the third quarter to stretch the margin to 7-4 and Lyne and junior Keaton McCann (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) followed with back-to-back man-up goals as the Dutchmen pushed its lead to 9-4 at the 11:42 mark. Sipes stopped the bleeding with an extra-man goal less than a minute later, and the Beavers got markers from Allen and sophomore Ryan Donovan (Cohasset, Mass.) late in the period to cut their deficit to 11-7.
Frey scored 51 seconds into the fourth and would complete his hat trick at the 9:42 mark as Union scored four unanswered goals to close the game.
The Dutchmen outshot the Beavers 47-24 and finished with a 35-24 edge in ground balls. The Green and White converted 16-of-18 clearing chances.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Babson hosts Endicott at 4 p.m., while Union takes on Williams at 5 p.m.
