Men's Lacrosse Takes Down Bates in OT, 12-11

Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine—Senior Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) with 1:05 left in overtime to lift visiting Babson College to a 12-11 win over Bates College in non-conference men's lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon at Garcelon Field.

Babson, which defeated Bates for the first time since 1990, improves to 2-0 on the year, while the Bobcats drop to 0-2.

Allen and junior Mason O'Hanlon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) both scored three times and senior Matthew MacCune (Braintree, Mass.) finished with two goals and three assists for a career-high five points to lead the Beavers. First-year Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) scored twice and junior John Antaya (Duxbury, Mass.) registered five ground balls and four caused turnovers in front of senior goaltender Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), who made 12 saves.

Junior Jack Scribner (Falmouth, Maine) scored four times, while seniors Curtis Knapton (Westbrook, Maine) and Otis Klingbeil (Powell, Ohio) each had two goals for the Bobcats. Junior Chris Costello (Ridgefield, Conn.) won 16-of-24 face-offs and scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls, and senior Rob Strain (Montclair, N.J.) made 15 saves in a losing effort.

The opening half featured five lead changes with the teams never being separated by more than a goal. O'Hanlon scored three times in the first quarter to give the Green and White a 4-3 advantage at the 1:20 mark before Scribner and Klingbeil struck for consecutive tallies as Bates went back up 5-4 at 8:49 of the second.

The Beavers led 6-5 at the break and pushed their margin to 8-6 after goals by senior Owen Peterson (San Diego, Calif.) and Allen midway through the third quarter. The Bobcats responded though, scoring three straight goals to regain a 9-8 edge on Scribner's third tally of the afternoon with 1:34 left in the period.

Babson scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter, including back-to-back markers by Price just over two minutes apart to match its biggest lead at 11-9 with 5:32 to go in regulation. Bates cut its deficit to one on a goal by sophomore Oliver Allen (Portsmouth, N.H.) with 3:20 remaining and then pulled event 55 seconds later thanks to Scribner's man-up tally.

Aranalde made two saves over the final 90 seconds of regulation and two more early in the extra session before sophomore Drew Thomas (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) forced a turnover and scooped up the ground ball setting up Allen's goal. After receiving a pass behind the cage he drove to the front of the crease and whipped a shot past Strain for the game winner.

The Beavers were successful on 20-of-22 clear attempts and forced 24 turnovers. The Bobcats finished with a 47-38 edge in shots and a 39-31 advantage in ground balls.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts No. 11 Union at 12 p.m., while Bates opens conference play at Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
