BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) finished with four goals and two assists to help Babson College defeat visiting Roger Williams University, 13-1, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With the victory, Babson opens the season at 1-0 for the fourth year in a row, while Roger Williams (0-1) dropped its season opener the fifth time in the last six seasons.
Juniors John Calicchio (Gulfstream, Fla.) and Lee Sipes (Windham, N.H.) each scored twice and senior Matthew MacCune (Braintree, Mass.) added a goal and two assists for the Beavers. Allen, Calicchio and sophomore Drew Thomas (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.), who caused two turnovers, all scooped up five ground balls, while junior John Antaya (Duxbury, Mass.) led all players with three caused turnovers in the win. Senior Kevin Klempner (Stuart, Fla.) won 6-of-9 face-offs and classmate Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made seven saves in just under 55 minutes of action between the pipes.
Senior Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for the Hawks, who got 17 saves from junior goaltender Ryan Bannon (Hopkinton, Mass.). Junior Connor Hillemeir (Farmington, Conn.) won 7-of-13 face-offs and tied for team-high honors with four ground balls in the loss.
Junior Alex Lesher (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Sipes gave the Green and White a 2-0 first-quarter advantage before Marzec got Roger Williams on the board with a man-up tally 3:36 in to the second. Allen answered with his first goal of the contest a minute later and then set up back-to-back markers by junior Quinn Schomp (Duxbury, Mass.) and MacCune just 23 seconds apart to stretch the Beavers' lead to 5-1 with 6:09 to go before halftime.
Bannon made four saves late in the second and two more early in the third quarter before Allen and Calicchio scored 1:31 apart to make it 7-1 midway through the stanza. Aranalde stuffed Hawks' sophomore Ryan Phillips (Hanover, Mass.) to setup Allen's transition score with 1:43 left in the third, and Calicchio set up Allen before notching his second goal of the day off a feed from junior Reed Goldstein (Minneapolis, Minn.) pushing the margin to 9-1 with 10:40 to go in the fourth.
First-year Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) and senior Kellan Page (North Andover, Mass.) both collected the first goals of their respective careers in the fourth quarter for Babson.
The Beavers outshot Roger Williams 53-15, were successful on 17-of-19 clear attempts and finished with a 43-33 edge in ground balls.
