Beavers Build 15-2 First-Half Lead En Route to Second Consecutive NEWMAC Win

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) and sophomore Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) each scored three times and Babson College built a 13-goal halftime lead on its way to defeating Wheaton College, 19-9, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at MacDowell Field.

Junior Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) and first-year Thomas Jung (Vienna, Va.) both scored twice, while junior Jason Cox (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Brendan Duffy (Duxbury, Mass.) each contributed a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Junior Connor Maloney (Hopkinton, Mass.) won 9-of-13 face-offs and led the team with six ground balls.

Sophomore Matt Morgan (York, Maine) had three goals and classmate CJ Leighton (Falmouth, Maine) scored twice for the Lyons. Junior Scott Whear (Duxbury, Mass.) scooped up a game-high eight ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers in the loss.

Sophomore Brett Bottomley (Mercer Island, Wash.) opened the scoring just under three minutes into the contest and Cox, Mishkind and Duffy followed with tallies just 25 seconds apart to give the Green and White a 4-0 lead with 10:22 to go in the first quarter. First-year Harrison Page (North Andover, Mass.) made it 6-1 late in the stanza, and the Beavers erupted for nine second-quarter goals to build a 15-2 advantage at the break.

Senior Daniel Madden (West Islip, N.Y.) opened the period with his first career goal, and junior Erik Patriquin (Sherborn, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate point with a tally in transition to make it 12-1 at the 6:16 Mark. Allen added all three of his goals and Fabel chipped in with a goal and an assist to help Babson break the game open with its highest scoring quarter of the season.

Junior Axel Brown (Little Compton, R.I.) and Mishkind scored 38 seconds apart early in the third to give the Beavers a 17-2 advantage, their biggest of the game, before Wheaton tallied six of the game's final eight goals.

Three different goaltenders combined to make four saves, led by three stops from junior Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.), for Babson. First-year Chandler Miller (West Linn, Ore.) turned away seven first-half shots for the Lyons.

The Beavers won 13-of-18 first-half face-offs and outshot Wheaton 34-9 over the opening 30 minutes of the game.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson hosts Clark, while the Lyons take on Springfield.
