Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.—Sophomore Lauren Drakeley (Woodbury, Conn.) scored twice and junior Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists to help 10th-ranked Babson College defeat Clark University, 4-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Friday night at Granger Field.
With the win, Babson is now 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Clark slips to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.
Senior Staci Swallow (South Portland, Maine) also scored, while classmate Kelsi McDougle (Hopedale, Mass.) chipped in with an assist for the Beavers, who won their NEWMAC opener for the sixth consecutive year. Fellow senior Corinne Urisko (Princeton, N.J.) made her first career start and did not have to make a save to record the first shutout of her career.
Drakeley opened the scoring just 2:21 into the contest when she took a feed from McDougle following a penalty corner and ripped a shot from the top of the circle past Cougars' sophomore goalkeeper Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.). Towers extended the Babson lead to 2-0 with her 10th goal of the season at the 6:04 mark, knocking in the rebound of a shot by first-year Kate Driscoll (Milton, Mass.).
The Green and White wasted little time adding to its lead as Drakeley beat multiple defenders and hit a low blast into the back of the cage to make it 3-0 less than nine minutes into the match. Michaud, who was superb in defeat for Clark, limited any further damage by making 12 first-half saves. She also got some help when junior Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.) was able to deny an attempt by McDougle just before halftime.
The Cougars were able to keep Babson off the scoreboard for much of the second half, despite conceding five penalty corners. Swallow finally broke through with her fifth tally of the year with 9:12 remaining for the final margin.
Michaud finished with 14 saves on the night for Clark, which also got a defensive save from senior Alyssa Williams (New Sharon, Maine) late in the second half.
The Beavers finished with a 33-0 edge in shot and attempted all of the game's 17 penalty corners.
Babson returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Union at 1 p.m., while Clark plays the last of five straight home games on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Daniel Webster.
