Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Junior Dom Abate (Beverly, Mass.) scored four times and sophomore goalkeeper Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) matched his career high with 17 saves as top-seeded Springfield College defeated second-seeded Babson College, 12-7, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championship game on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Babson, which had won a program-record nine straight games entering the day, wraps up the season at 10-8. Springfield, which claimed its ninth consecutive conference title, is now 11-7 and earned the NEWMAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) scored two goals and dished out one assist to lead the Beavers. First-year Niall Dillon (Duxbury, Mass.) scored twice, while junior Zach Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) scooped up a career-high 11 ground balls to go along with four caused turnovers. Classmate Daniel Madden (West Islip, N.Y.) set a new career-high with four caused turnovers and sophomore Jack O'Donoghue (Scituate, Mass.) finished with six ground balls and forced three turnovers.
Senior Kevin Dean (Westhampton, N.Y.) scored twice and dished out three assists, while sophomore Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.) added two goals and two assists for the Pride. Junior Brendan Dooley (Setauket, N.Y.) scooped up five ground balls and caused four turnovers.
Doten gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead with a man-up goal 5:40 into the first quarter. Abate tied it 20 seconds later and Springfield ripped off five straight tallies, including two from senior Tony Laguerre (Shrub Oak, N.Y.), to build a 5-1 advantage 90 seconds into the second quarter. Doten stopped the bleeding momentarily with his second marker of the game at the 11:47 mark, but the Pride responded with a three-goal spurt, the final two coming from Abate, to extended its lead to 8-2 just under five minutes before halftime.
Dillon scored late in the second quarter and then a little less than five minutes into the third quarter to pull the Beavers within 9-4. Babson sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made five third-quarter saves and Reynolds, the Tournament Most Outstanding Player, made eight of his 10 second-half saves during a 15-minute stretch that saw both teams go scoreless. Senior Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) scored the Green and White's first goal of the fourth quarter with 4:23 left, but Springfield followed with back-to-back tallies to build a 12-5 lead, its biggest of the game, with 3:20 remaining.
Seniors Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) and John Harrison (Pembroke, Mass.) both scored in the closing minutes, while classmate Connor Toomey (Vero Beach, Fla.) chipped in with a late assist for Babson.
Shapiro finished with 10 saves for the Beavers, who were outshot 39-37. The Green and White won 12-of-22 face-offs but finished just 1-for-5 on man-up opportunities.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers, who were making their fourth straight conference title game appearance, are 0-8 all-time in the league playoffs against Springfield.
• Babson, which entered the game ranked 29th nationally in scoring offense (13.38 goals), was held to its lowest output since a 12-6 loss at Bowdoin on March 29.
• The Green and White finished the season with 221 goals, good for the second highest total going back to 1995.
• Low (120-19-139) finishes his career ranked 11th all-time in points.
