Box Score SALEM, Mass.—Babson College sophomore John Floegel (Summit, N.J.) allowed just one earned run over 5.2 innings, but Salem State University erupted for five runs over the final two innings on its way to defeating the Beavers, 7-3, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon.
Babson, which had its five-game winning streak snapped, is now 21-13-1 on the year, while Salem State moves to 16-16-1 overall.
Senior George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) and junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) both had two hits for the Beavers. Sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) added a double, while Floegel allowed five hits and struck out three before leaving with a no-decision in the sixth.
Junior Mac Daniel Singleton (Everett, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, while senior Mike Davis (Peabody, Mass.) added a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.
The Green and White took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) reached with a bunt single, stole second and later stole home on a delayed double steal. Babson extended its advantage in the fifth as junior Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a passed ball and a single before scoring on Ayala's ground out to make it 2-0.
Salem State, which was limited to just three hits over the first five innings tied the game with a pair of runs in the sixth. Singleton made it 2-1 with an RBI triple, and then scored to tie the game on an RBI base hit by Davis.
The Vikings took the lead for good an inning later as junior Andrew Deloury (Peabody, Mass.) recorded the only hit of the frame, a two-out, bases-clearing double to make it 5-2. The Beavers cut their deficit to two on first-year Edward Lehr's (Byram Township, N.J.) sacrifice fly, but junior Tim Woods (Wilmington, Mass.) came on with the bases loaded and escaped further damage by inducing a fly out to center field.
Junior Ken Rotunno (East Islip, N.Y.) took the loss for Babson to drop to 3-4 on the year, while first-year Stephen Keskindis (Stoneham, Mass.) evened his record at 1-1 for Salem State despite giving up six hits over two innings.
Both teams return to action on Thursday as Babson hosts Coast Guard in a NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinal at 3:30 p.m., while Salem State takes on Framingham State in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
