Bates Stuns No. 8 Field Hockey in OT, 3-2

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Taylor Lough (Little Compton, R.I.) scored 1:41 into overtime to help visiting Bates College upset eighth-ranked Babson College, 3-2, in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday night at MacDowell Field.

Babson, which had its seven-game winning streak snapped, is now 12-2 overall, while Bates improves to 7-5 on the year.

Senior Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) scored twice for the Beavers, who got two saves from first-year Deirdre Barry (Longmeadow, Mass.).

Junior Sydney Beres (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Adah Lindquist (Wayne, Pa.) each scored once for the Bobcats, who got assists from Lough and sophomore Jessie Moriarty (Springfield, Mass.). Classmate Adelae Durand (Cumberland, R.I.) made six saves and first-year Alyssa Souza (Scarborough, Maine) turned away one shot in the victory.

Bates opened the scoring just over nine and a half minutes into the match when Beres tipped home a blast by Lough following a penalty corner for her third tally of the season. The Green and White pulled even just over 11 minutes later though, as Spofford punched home a rebound in front of the cage at the 20:43 mark.

Babson took a 2-1 lead just under six minutes into the second when Spofford struck for her eighth goal of the season after consecutive penalty corners. The Beavers were able to maintain their advantage despite conceding three straight corners to the Bobcats midway through the half, but committed a costly turnover in the 58th minute as Beres intercepted a pass that set up Lindquist's equalizer at the 57:14 mark.

Neither team registered a shot on goal over the final 12 minutes and Lough converted the only chance of the extra session when she carried the ball along the end line and somehow poked it past Barry in a crowd of defenders.

Babson finished with a 14-7 edge in shots and held a 9-7 edge in penalty corners.

The Beavers return to action on Saturday when they host Mount Holyoke at 12 p.m., while Bates takes on Southern Maine next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
