Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.—Junior John Harrison (Pembroke, Mass.) finished with two goals and three assists, and senior Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) won 15-of-19 face-offs as visiting Babson College defeated the Coast Guard Academy, 13-7, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.
With its fifth straight win, Babson (10-6, 7-0 NEWMAC) clinched its first outright NEWMAC regular-season title, and completed its conference slate without a loss for the first time since 1990. Coast Guard, which had won two straight games, concludes its first varsity season at 4-10 overall and 2-5 in the league.
Senior Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.) and juniors Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) and Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) all scored twice for the Beavers. First-year Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) and junior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) combined to dish out five assists on the day. Russo and fellow senior Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) each collected five ground balls and classmate Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) led all players with three caused turnovers.
First-year Alec Groff (Willow Street, Pa.) scored twice to lead the Bears. Senior Pat Dreiss (Wantagh, N.Y.) and junior Justin Huemme (Sherborn, Mass.) both scored once and added one assist, while senior Nick Chicoine (Massapequa, N.Y.) led all players with six ground balls.
After Babson took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Brown midway through the opening quarter, back-to-back markers by Groff and Hummee put Coast Guard up 2-1 with 4:38 to go in the stanza. First-year Taylor Segreti (North Potomac, Md.) and Low answered back with consecutive goals, but Dreiss knotted the game at 3-3 with 18 seconds left in the period.
The Beavers used a three-goal run, including man-up tallies from first-year Jason Cox (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Matthew Logan (Downingtown, Pa.), to build a 6-3 lead with 7:50 to go in the second quarter. The Bears got within one, scoring a pair of goals just 23 seconds apart late in the stanza, but Harrison made it 7-5 at the break with his first goal of the game just 89 seconds from halftime.
Babson scored the first four goals of the second half, and took advantage of nine third-quarter Coast Guard turnovers to pull away. Coan set up Doten and Low to open the period, and Barsalou and Harrison capped the four-goal spurt that gave the Green and White an 11-5 advantage midway through the third.
The Bears scored late in the third quarter, and Groff added his second tally of the day to get within 12-7 at the 10:07 mark of the fourth quarter. Bunick scored just under two minutes later though, and Beavers' first-year goalkeeper Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) came up with three late saves to preserve the victory.
Shapiro finished with nine saves on the day, while sophomore Matt McAllister (Colchester, Conn.) and Kurt Caminske (Sayville, N.Y.) combined to stop 15 shots for Coast Guard.
The Green and White held a 47-37 advantage in shots and a 35-31 edge in ground balls. The Beavers also won 16-of-23 face-offs on the afternoon.
Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts fourth-seeded Wheaton in a NEWMAC semifinal at 7 p.m.
