Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) and first-year Jason Cox (Hopkinton, Mass.) each scored three goals as Babson College cruised past visiting Wheaton College, 16-4, in a battle of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse unbeatens on Wednesday night at MacDowell Field.
With its second consecutive win, Babson is now 7-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while Wheaton drops to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC.
Senior Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.), sophomore Matthew Logan (Downingtown, Pa.) and first-year Axel Brown (Little Compton, R.I.) all scored twice for the Beavers, while junior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) added one goal to go along with a game-high three assists. Senior Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) won 7-of-12 face-offs and collected four ground balls, and both classmate Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Zach Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) finished with five ground balls.
Sophomore Devin Higgins (Nantucket, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Lyons. Senior Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass.) and sophomore Casey Buchholz (North Granby, Conn.) both added one goal, while first-year James Higgins (Duxbury, Mass.) led all players with six ground balls. Buchholz and senior Alfonse Femino (Malden, Mass.) tied for game-high honors with three caused turnovers apiece.
Brown and Low scored just 67 seconds apart to give the Green and White a 2-0 lead with 12:21 to go in the first quarter. Devin Higgins converted a feed from sophomore Ryan Gjerset (Austin, Texas) to pull Wheaton within 2-1 at the 4:58 mark of the opening stanza, but Babson responded with a four-goal run to take control of the game.
Low scored with 2:15 to go in the first quarter before Barsalou, first-year Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) and Coan all struck for goals over the first 5:26 of the second quarter as the Beavers built a 6-1 lead. Buccholz scored in transition with 6:18 left in the period, and Lyons' first-year goalkeeper Ryan Clair (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) made four saves late in the half to stay within 6-2 at the break.
After both teams hit a post to open the third, Cox and Barsalou scored just 59 seconds apart as the Green and White pushed its lead to 8-2 with 9:50 left in the quarter. Babson first-year Taylor Segreti (North Potomac, Md.) and Higgins traded goals before Logan notched the first of his two goals with 1:08 left in the stanza to give the hosts a 10-3 advantage going to the fourth quarter.
The Beavers scored the first six goals of the fourth quarter, including two by Cox over the final four minutes, to take their biggest lead of the night at 16-3 with 1:37 to play. Hillman beat a defender and scored with a bounce shot for Wheaton with 1:03 to go in the contest.
Babson first-year goalkeeper Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) finished with three saves, while Clair made nine of his 12 stops in the first half.
The Beavers, who went 24-of-26 on clear opportunities, won 14-of-23 face-offs and finished with a 53-30 advantage in ground balls.
The Lyons went 16-of-27 on clear chances and committed 32 turnovers. The teams combined to go 0-for-9 on man-up chances.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson takes on Clark in its final regular-season home game, while Wheaton hosts Springfield.
