Fast Start Pushes Men's Lacrosse Past Massachusetts Maritime, 18-7

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. The Babson College men's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 in league play for the third straight year thanks to its 18-7 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Massachusetts Maritime Academy at MacDowell Field.

Winners in three of their last four games, the Beavers reached the .500 mark while improving their overall record to 6-6.  The Green and White also stretched its winning streak against the Buccaneers to 18 since 1990.  Dropping its third consecutive game, Massachusetts Maritime is also 6-6 on the year while falling to 1-2 in NEWMAC play.

Senior Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.) led Babson with a pair of goals and three assists, sophomore Matthew Logan (Downingtown, Pa.) finished with two markers and two helpers, while junior John Harrison (Pembroke, Mass.) had a hat trick.  Classmate Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.), sophomore Brennen Walker (Scituate, Mass.) and first-year Axel Brown (Little Compton, R.I.) each scored twice, while junior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) added a goal and two assists.

For the guests, first-year Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.) tallied two goals and senior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal and one assist.

The hosts rattled off the game's first five goals in the opening frame, including scoring just 1:38 into play when Barsalou connected with junior Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) for a quick 1-0 lead.  Logan notched back-to-back scores 2:31 apart and was followed by first-year Taylor Segreti (North Potomac, Md.) with 8:15 on the clock and Coan on a man-down strike with just two ticks showing.

The visitors eventually got on the board with 6:37 remaining in the first half when sophomore Joseph Landry (Chatham, N.J.) successfully converted on a man-up goal.  Babson responded with consecutive markers within a 29-second span for a 7-1 advantage before Barsalou found the back of the net for the second time of the half with 29 seconds showing.

The Green and White carried that momentum into the second half, scoring twice within the first three minutes of the third period for a comfortable 10-1 lead, but the visitors ripped off three straight goals to climb back within six at the 5:16 mark. Harrison made the score 11-4 at 2:08 and followed a Buccaneer goal with another tally with two seconds on the clock that gave the hosts a 12-5 edge heading into the final quarter.

Babson put the game out of reach in the final frame by scoring six of the period's first seven goals.  Walker recorded a pair of strikes during the run, while Coan added two assists.

First-year goalie Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) allowed six goals and was credited with seven saves in nearly 48 minutes of action for the Beavers, while Buccaneer junior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) finished with 20 stops.

The Beavers held advantages of 63-27 in shots and 53-31 in goundballs.

Babson continues its four-game homestand on Wednesday evening against conference rival Wheaton College at 7 p.m., while Massachusetts Maritime begins a three-game home stretch versus Clark the same night and time.
