Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Jason Cox (Westwood, Mass.) scored three goals, all in the first quarter, and classmate Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists as Babson College defeated visiting Eastern Connecticut State, 10-6, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With the win, Babson is now 1-1 on the year, while Eastern Connecticut drops to 0-2.
Junior Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) scored twice, while senior Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.), junior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) and sophomore Matthew Logan (Downingtown, Pa.) all had one goal for the Beavers. Junior John Harrison (Pembroke, Mass.) contributed two assists in the win. Senior Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) led all players with nine groundballs, and combined with classmate Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) to force eight turnovers. Fellow senior Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) won 10-of-16 face-offs.
First-year Dane Heckmann (Brookfield, Conn.) scored three times to lead the Warriors. Juniors Michael Dellano (Wakefield, Mass.) and Tim Reilly (Hanover, Mass.) both finished with a goal and an assist, while classmate Dan Vazquez (Newington, Conn.) scored once.
Fabel opened the scoring with the first goal of his career just 3:16 into the contest, and Babson closed the period with four goals over the final 4:05 of the period to take control of the game. Low gave the Beavers a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the year, and Cox followed with three straight tallies, including a shot from behind his back off a feed from Harrison with six seconds left in the stanza to put the Beavers in front 5-1.
Reilly and Heckman scored back-to-back goals just 1:04 apart to pull the Warriors back to within 5-3 with 10:03 remaining in the second quarter. The Green and White responded with a three-goal run though, as Fabel, Barsalou and Coan pushed the lead to 8-3 with 4:22 to play. Vazquez scored off a pass from senior Steve Nixon (Foxborough, Mass.) with 2:53 left in the frame to cut Babson's lead to 8-4 at the half.
The Beavers matched their biggest lead of the game when Low notched his second goal of the game to make it 9-4 with 4:02 remaining in the third quarter. Heckman scored just 10 seconds later after Reilly scooped up a groundball on the face-off and found him in front of the crease, but Logan pushed Babson's advantage to 10-5 with his goal at the 2:06 mark of the third.
The Green and White killed off a pair of penalties in the fourth quarter, and held Eastern Connecticut to just four shots on goal with first-year goalkeeper Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) making three of his seven stops over the final 15 minutes.
Junior Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, Mass.) finished with 19 saves for the Warriors, who were outshot 59-24.
The Beavers finished with a 44-30 edge in groundballs and were 26-for-31 on clears. Eastern Connecticut was 26-for-33 on clear attempts, while both teams went 0-for-4 on extra-man opportunities.
Both teams will return to action on Saturday as Babson visits fourth-ranked Union at 1 p.m., while the Warriors travel to Hartwick for a 4 p.m. start.
GAME NOTES: Babson has won two of the last three meetings against Eastern Connecticut...the Beavers have now won 19 of their last 21 games when scoring eight or more goals...Babson has won 10 of its last 14 games at MacDowell Field going back to 2013.
