Beavers Snap Pride's 57-Game Conference Winning Streak 

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Junior Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) scored three times, and first-year goalkeeper Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made 11 saves as visiting Babson College defeated Springfield College, 12-10, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

With the win, Babson (4-5, 1-0 NEWMAC) defeated the Pride for the first time since 1979, and snapped Springfield's (3-5, 0-1 NEWMAC) 57-game conference-winning streak.

Sophomore Matthew Logan (Downingtown, Pa.) had two goals and two assists, while junior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) added two goals and one assist for the Beavers. Senior Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored twice, and first-year Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) chipped in with two assists and four groundballs. Senior Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) and sophomore Zach Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) also finished with four groundballs, while senior Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Daniel Madden (West Islip, N.Y.) tied for team-high honors with three caused turnovers.

Senior Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals to lead the Pride. Junior Brendan Boss (West Springfield, Mass.) had two goals, senior Bryce Seriello (Barnstable, Mass.) contributed two assists, and classmates Kevin Sainte (Belmont, Mass.) and Jamey Conley (Waltham, Mass.) both added a goal and an assist apiece. Fellow senior Mark Gonzalez (Tolland, Conn.) won 17-of-25 face-offs and led all players with seven groundballs, while junior Maxwell Abendroth (Sunapee, N.H.) finished with a game-high four caused turnovers in the loss.

Logan opened the scoring for the Green and White with a man-up goal just 4:59 into the first quarter, but Springfield scored back-to-back markers, the last by Sheehan with 4:08 left in the period, to take a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes. Low finished a pass from Logan to tie the game 36 seconds into the second quarter, but the Pride responded with three of the next four goals, including two by Sheehan, to take a 5-3 advantage with 2:31 left in the second quarter.

Despite winning just 3-of-10 first-half face-offs, the Beavers forced Springfield into 13 turnovers in the opening half. The Pride had the ball with a chance to extended its lead with under a minute to go in the first half, but Coan scored following a turnover with 19 seconds left in the half, and Shapiro denied Boss with one second left as Babson went into the break trailing 5-4.

Shapiro came up with another big save on a Springfield extra-man opportunity just over two and a half minutes into the third quarter, and Coan converted a feed from Fabel to tie the game at 5-5 with 11:12 left in the stanza. Boss put the Pride back in front just 33 seconds later, but the Green and White ripped off four straight goals over the final 7:15 of the third to take control of the game.

Logan and Barsalou gave the Beavers a 7-6 lead with 6:41 to go after capitalizing on turnovers, and Russo notched his only goal of the afternoon 31 seconds later to make it a two-goal game. Shapiro denied Gonzalez's shot on the ensuing face-off, and Low struck for his second goal of the game with just 32 seconds to go in the third to give Babson a 9-6 lead.

Barsalou scored to give the Green and White a four-goal lead with 11:42 to go in the game, but Sainte ended a Pride scoring drought of over 18 minutes with his goal to make it 10-7 with 7:21 left. Babson countered with back-to-back goals by Low and junior John Harrison (Pembroke, Mass.) though, to take its biggest lead of the game at 12-7 with 1:41 left. Springfield scored three times over the final 1:20, but Shapiro made a save on senior Matt Dalton (Somers, N.Y.) in the closing seconds to preserve the victory.

Junior Kevin Ostrom (Barnstable, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Santaniello (West Springfield, Mass.) combined to make 13 saves for the Pride, while held a 42-37 advantage in shots and a 39-33 edge in groundballs.

The Beavers were 19-of-22 on clears, and scored the only man-up goal of the game.

Babson returns to action next Saturday when it travels to MIT at 1 p.m., while Springfield visits cross-town rival Western New England on Thursday at 4 p.m.

GAME NOTES: The Beavers have now won their conference opener in eight of the last nine years going back to 2007…Babson is 4-0 this season and has won 10 straight games going back to last season when scoring at least nine goals…the Beavers have outscored their opponents 20-12 in the third quarter this spring…the victory was the first of the season for Babson when trailing at halftime.
