Box Score BALTIMORE—Seniors Matthew Hauck and James O'Connell each scored four goals Trinity College defeated Babson College, 12-3, in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday night.
With the win, Trinity snapped a three-game losing streak and is now 2-4 overall, while Babson drops to 3-3.
Junior Ryan DeSimone contributed two goals and four assists for the Bantams, who never trailed in the game. First-year JP Masaryk won 15-of-20 face-offs and led all players with five groundballs in the win.
Junior Scott Doten (Western Springs Ill.) and John Harrison (Pembroke, Mass.), and first-year Jason Cox (Westwood, Mass.) all scored once for the Beavers. Sophomore Matthew Logan (Downington, Pa.) had two assists, while seniors Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) and Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) combined for seven groundballs and six caused turnovers. First-year Taylor Segreti (North Potomac, Md.) also collected four groundballs for the Green and White.
First-year Jack Sharrie gave Trinity a 1-0 lead with 3:39 to go in the first quarter, but Doten answered with a man-up goal just 39 seconds later to tie the game for Babson. Hauck notched his first marker of the game with 12:55 to go in the second period, and DeSimone and O'Connell scored back-to-back goals in the final 5:06 of the stanza to put the Bantams in front 4-1 at halftime.
O'Connell scored again early in the third quarter to make it a four-goal game, but Cox struck for a man-up goal at the 9:14 mark to get the Beavers back within 5-2. Trinity responded with a four-goal run though, as O'Connell closed the period with consecutive tallies, and Hauck scored twice in the opening 2:02 of the fourth quarter as the Bantams pushed their lead to 9-2.
Harrison converted a feed from junior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) to cut the Babson deficit to 9-3 with 10:37 to go. Hauck notched his fourth goal of the game just 15 seconds later though, and Trinity added a pair of late markers for the final margin.
Senior goalkeeper Makar Zaverucha made six of his 11 saves in the first quarter for the Bantams, while first-year Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made four of his five saves in the opening 30 minutes for the Green and White.
The Beavers held a 32-29 edge in shots and went 15-for-19 on clear opportunities, while Trinity finished with a 31-29 advantage in groundballs.
Babson returns to action on Friday when it takes on Colorado College at 11:30 a.m. on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology, while Trinity travels to Tufts on Saturday at 1 p.m.
