Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.—Junior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) and first-year Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) both scored twice, and visiting Babson College used a six-goal first-half run to cruise past Roger Williams University, 9-4, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field.
With its second straight win, Babson is now 3-2 overall, while Roger Williams drops to 2-3 on the year.
Sophomore Matthew Logan (Downingtown, Pa.) had a goal and two assists, while senior Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) collected nine groundballs and forced six turnovers for the Beavers. Classmate Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) finished with seven groundballs and five caused turnovers, while fellow senior Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.), who scooped up seven groundballs, combined with first-year Connor Maloney (Hopkinton, Mass.) to win 11-of-17 face-offs.
Junior Will Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.) scored twice for the Hawks, who also got a goal and an assist from sophomore Max Cammarota (Reading, Conn.). First-year Jon Gomer (Duxbury, Mass.), who won 5-of-7 face-offs, finished with seven groundballs and four caused turnovers, while junior Tim Kelly (Ridgefield, Conn.) and senior Jordan Nachowitz (Ridgefield, Conn.) both collected five groundballs in the loss.
Cammarota opened the scoring at 10:36 of the first quarter, but the Green and White followed with a 6-0 run that spanned nearly 17 minutes to take control of the game. Fabel sandwiched a pair of first-quarter tallies around a goal by Coan to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes, and Russo stretched the lead to three after winning the opening face-off of the second quarter.
Coan and junior Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) notched back-to-back goals to make it 6-1 with 3:19 to go in the second. Junior Cam Donelly (Medfield, Mass.) scored with 2:49 to go in the stanza to get Roger Williams within 6-2 at the break.
The Hawks outshot the Beavers 10-9 in the third quarter, but first-year goalkeeper Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made three saves, and junior Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) scored his fifth goal of the season at the 6:49 mark of the frame to stretch the lead to 7-2. Siefert notched back-to-back markers to open the fourth quarter, pulling the Hawks within three with 9:32 remaining, but Maloney won the ensuing face-off and scored in transition six seconds later to put the Green and White back in front 8-4.
Shapiro finished with 11 saves for the Beavers, while senior Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) stopped 13 shots for Roger Williams.
Babson was 20-for-29 on clear opportunities and finished with a slim 52-50 edge in groundballs on the afternoon.
Both teams will return to action on Tuesday as the Beavers will travel to Baltimore to face Trinity on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, while Roger Williams hosts Farmingdale State at 7 p.m.
