Men's Lacrosse Runs Away From New England College, 20-8

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Connor Maloney (Hopkinton, Mass.) was a perfect 20-for-20 on face-offs, and junior Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) scored a career-high six goals as Babson College cruised past visiting New England College, 20-8, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With the win, Babson evened its record at 2-2, while New England College dropped to 0-2 on the year.

First-year Taylor Segreti (North Potomac, Md.) finished with three goals and two assists, while junior Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) tallied three times to match his career high. First-years Axel Brown (Little Compton, R.I.) and Jason Cox (Westwood, Mass.) both scored twice, and senior Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.), sophomores Matthew Logan (Downingtown, Pa.) and Brennen Walker (Scituate, Mass.), and first-year Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) all scored once. Junior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) chipped in with a career-high four assists, and Maloney led all players with 10 groundballs.

Junior Connor Abbatessa (Leeds, Mass.) finished with two goals to lead the Pilgrims. Sophomore William Pendleton (Chalfont, Pa.) had a goal and an assist, and junior Skyler Saunders (Cambridge, N.Y.) added a pair of assists.

Low and Brown each scored to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead just 4:02 into the contest before first-year Matt Richard (Weare, N.H.) cut the New England College deficit in half with 4:43 left in the opening stanza. The Beavers responded though, ripping off a five-goal run that spanned both the first and second quarter to build a six-goal lead. Low scored two of the final three goals of the first quarter to make it 5-1, and Logan stretched the lead to 7-1 at the 11:50 mark of the second.

Abbatessa scored his first goal of the day to get the Pilgrims back within 7-2 with 10:20 left before halftime, but the Green and White capped the period by scoring four of the final five markers. Doten notched a pair of goals, including a man-up tally, and Low added his fourth of the half to give Babson an 11-3 lead at the break.

Low and Segreti both scored in the opening 1:16 of the third quarter to make it a 10-goal game. New England College senior Asa Weisberg (Warner, N.H.) converted a feed from Pendleton at the 11:47 mark, but the Beavers got tallies from Walker, Segreti and Fabel to take a 16-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Pilgrims scored twice in the first 3:59 of the final stanza to pull within 17-7, and Abbatessa notched his second goal of the game with 4:42 to play to cut their deficit to nine. Babson followed with three tallies over the last 2:39 for the final margin.

Beavers' first-year goalkeeper Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made three saves over the first three quarters, while sophomore Grant Masingill (Victor, N.Y.) stopped a pair of fourth-quarter shots. Senior Chris Galluzzo (New London, N.H.) made 17 saves for New England College.

The Green and White won 27-of-31 face-offs on the afternoon and finished with a 59-31 edge in groundballs.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson travels to Roger Williams, while New England college visits the University of Southern Maine.

GAME NOTES: Babson is now 14-6 all-time against New England College and has won eight straight against the Pilgrims going back to 2001...the Beavers' 20 goals are their most in a game since a 21-7 win over Clark on April 24, 2013...Babson has won 20 of its last 22 games when scoring 10 goals or more...the Beavers have also won 11 of their last 15 games at MacDowell Field.
