Skidmore Edges Men's Lacrosse, 6-5, In OT

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Josh Trachtenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) scored 1:17 into overtime as visiting Skidmore College slipped past Babson College, 6-5, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With the win, Skidmore is now 1-0 on the year, while Babson drops to 0-1.

First-year RJ Caruso (Burlington, Mass.) scored twice, while senior Connor Hunter (Babylon, N.Y.) and first-year Brendan Halloran (Pleasantville, N.Y.) both had a goal and an assist for the Thoroughbreds. Sophomore Jack Metzler (Garden City, N.Y.) also had a goal, while senior Sam Christiansen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) led all players with six groundballs.

Junior John Harrison (Pembroke, Mass.) tied his career high with three goals to lead the Beavers. Seniors Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) each scored once, while juniors Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) and Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.), sophomore Matthew Logan (Downingtown, Pa.) and first-year Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) all chipped in with an assist.

Skidmore started fast as Metzler opened the scoring 32 seconds into the contest and helped the visitors build a 4-0 first-quarter lead. The Thoroughbreds, who won five of the seven first-half face-offs, took their biggest lead of the game on Caruso's second goal to make it 5-0 with 12:39 left in the second quarter.

Babson finally got on the board in the third quarter as Harrison notched a pair of goals to cut its deficit to 5-2. Barsalou made it a two-goal game with his first tally of the year at the 8:07 mark of the fourth quarter, and Harrison scored his third goal of the game to get the Beavers within 5-4 with 55 seconds to play.

Senior Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) won the ensuing face-off and missed wide with his shot, but Skidmore was called for an offsides penalty giving the Green and White a man-up opportunity with 42 seconds left. Following a timeout, Bunick converted a feed from Doten with 24 seconds to go to tie the game at 5-5. The Thoroughbreds won the final face-off of regulation but turned the ball over, sending the game to overtime.

Russo won the initial face-off the extra period, but the Beavers turned the ball over without getting a shot off. After a successful clear and a timeout, Babson first-year goalkeeper Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) denied a shot by Caruso to keep the game deadlocked. The Thoroughbreds maintained possession, and Trachtenberg's game-winner came just 12 seconds after the Green and White was called for a penalty.

Shapiro finished with 12 saves in his collegiate debut for Babson, while first-year Chris Baughan (Foxboro, Mass.) stopped 14 shots for Skidmore.

The Thoroughbreds won 9-of-14 face-offs and held a 34-24 edge in groundballs.

The Beavers had a 31-29 advantage in shots and both teams went 1-for-4 in man-up situations.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Babson hosts Eastern Connecticut State at 3:30 p.m., while Skidmore visits Williams at 6 p.m.
