Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.—Sophomore Bryn McGillivray (Westwood, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal with 21:18 remaining in the game to lift Connecticut College past visiting Babson College, 2-1, in non-conference field hockey action at Silfen Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Connecticut College is now 1-1 on the year, while Babson drops to 2-1 overall.
The Camels jumped in front 1-0 at the 9:40 mark of the first half as first-year Meghan Lembo (Southington, Conn.) converted a centering pass from senior Maggie Rakovic (Narragansett, R.I.). The Beavers leveled the score late in the period though, as senior Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) fed sophomore Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) for her second goal in as many games following a scrum in front of the cage at 28:40.
Connecticut College went back in front for good midway through the second half by cashing in on its only penalty corner of the stanza. First-year Cheyanne Asplundh (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) found McGillivray inside the circle and her blast beat Babson junior goalkeeper Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.) to make it 2-1 in the 49th minute.
Costa finished with a career-high six saves for the Green and White, while sophomore Ryley van der Velde (Louisville, Ky.) stopped five shots to earn her first career win for the Camels.
The Beavers, which were outshot 8-6, held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners on the day.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson hosts nationally-ranked Tufts University at 6 p.m., while Connecticut College travels to face Smith College at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Babson is now 3-5 all-time against Connecticut College, with four of the eight games being decided by a single goal…going back to last season, four of the Beavers last six games have been decided by one goal…Malone is the only Babson player to record at least a point in all three games this season, and going back to last year she has contributed a goal or an assist in six of the last eight games.
