Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Sophomore Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) scored four goals and classmate John Harrison (Pembroke, Mass.) contributed two goals and three assists helping Babson College cruise past Southwestern University, 12-8, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Friday evening at Washburn Field.
With the victory, Babson is now 3-5 on the year, while Southwestern slips to 5-3 overall.
First-year John Higgins (Duxbury, Mass.) scored a career-high three goals, and junior Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) led the Beavers with seven groundballs and three caused turnovers. First-year Daniel Madden (West Islip, N.Y.) chipped in with six groundballs, and classmate Connor Hinton (Florham Park, N.J.) won 15-of-18 face-offs in the win.
First-year Matthew Montagne (Fairfax, Va.) led the Pirates with two goals and two assists, while junior Jackson Timian (Southlake, Texas) scored twice and had one assist to go along with a team-high five groundballs.
Babson took control of the game by scoring the first five goals on its way to building an 8-1 halftime lead. Sophomore Alex Youngwall (Huntington, N.Y.) got the Green and White on the board at the 10:06 mark of the opening quarter, and Low and senior Alex Packer (Hudson, Ohio) followed with goals to make it 3-0 with 3:41 left in the first. Junior Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) scored with 1:08 to go in the period to push the lead to four, and Low notched his second goal of the game just 2:21 into the second for a 5-0 edge.
Senior Carter Cowan (Austin, Texas) got Southwestern on the board with 9:39 to until halftime, but the Beavers tacked on three more goals to push their advantage to seven after 30 minutes.
Low notched his fourth goal of the day 2:23 into the third quarter, and Higgins and Harrison followed with back-to-back tallies, capping a six-goal run to give Babson an 11-1 lead with 4:22 to go in the stanza.
The Pirates, which were outshot 37-23 for the game, held a 12-2 edge in the final stanza and outscored the Beavers 6-0 for the final margin.
Senior Adam Daroff (Pepper Pike, Ohio) stopped one shot over the first 30 minutes to earn the win, while first-year Giles Ober (Southborough, Mass.) made four second-half saves for Babson.
Sophomore Charlie Fisher (Memphis, Tenn.) made four saves over the first 36:30 for Southwestern before giving way to junior AJ Cole (Austin, Texas), who stopped five shots over the final 23:30.
The Green and White held a 42-27 edge in groundballs and won 18-for-24 face-offs.
Babson will travel to the University of New England on Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Southwestern will remain in Colorado Springs to face Colorado College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
