Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—Junior Chris Warren (Medfield, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and sophomore George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, lifting Babson College to a 7-3 victory over Alfred State College in non-conference baseball action on Friday afternoon.
With the win, Babson is now 2-5 on the year, while Alfred State drops to 1-14.
Junior Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) had two hits and one RBI, while senior Sean Lanahan (Avon, Conn.) and juniors Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) and Joe Zanca (Braintree, Mass.) all drove in a run.
First-year Matthew Nawrot (Clarence, N.Y.) had two hits and scored a run for the Pioneers, while classmate Cullen Franz (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia, N.Y.) both drove in a run apiece.
Senior Brendan Collins (Abington, Mass.) reached on an error to lead off the top of the second inning and Lanahan and Warren followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Green and White a 2-0 lead. Alfred State got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but Babson used an RBI double from Gonzalez in the fourth and a sacrifice fly from Zanca in the fifth to extend its lead to 4-1.
The Pioneers put together a two-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to make it a one run game. After loading the bases with a hit batsman, an error, and an infield single, Franz and Hierlwimmer came through with consecutive one-out run-scoring singles to make it 4-3.
The Beavers wouldn't let the game get any closer though, tacking on three runs in the top of the ninth. Crowley singled through the right side to plate Warren and first-year Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.), and MacPhee brought home first-year Jacob Weiss (Irvine, Calif.), who came into run for Crowley, to push the lead to 7-3.
Junior Connor Allen (Madison, N.J.), who relieved sophomore starter Brody Loughlin (Rockland, Mass.) in the eighth, closed things down in the bottom of the frame for his first save of the year. Loughlin earned the win allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three over 7 1/3 innings.
Senior Vincent McDaniel (Arkport, N.Y.) took the loss for Alfred State, giving up three earned runs on six hits and four walks over five innings.
Babson wraps up its trip to Florida on Saturday when it faces Springfield in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
