Box Score WENHAM, Mass.--Senior Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Kelsi McDougle (Hopedale, Mass.) each had a goal and an assist, and visiting Babson College scored four times in the span of 8:29 late in the second half to defeat Gordon College, 5-1, in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at the Brigham Sports Complex.
With the win, Babson is now 9-9 overall, while Gordon, which had won seven of its last eight games, drops to 10-7 on the year.
Sophomores Megan Jones (Essex, Mass.) and Nicole Smith (Barrington, R.I.), and first-year Julie Mortimer (Spencer, Mass.) all scored once for the Beavers. Sophomores Staci Swallow (South Portland, Maine) and Corinne Urisko (Princeton, N.J.) each chipped in with an assist in the win.
The Fighting Scots opened the scoring 18:04 into the game when senior Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.) converted a feed from classmate Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) for a 1-0 lead. The Green and White answered though, as Mortimer scored for the third time in the last three games off a feed from Malone to even the score at 1-1 in the 26th minute.
Scoring opportunities were scarce over the first 20 minutes of the second half, with each team only registering one shot on goal apiece. Malone had an opportunity to give Babson its first lead of the game in the 54th minute on a penalty stroke, but her attempt was stopped by Gordon sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine). The save did not shift momentum though, as the Beavers went in front just two minutes later on Smith's first career goal.
McDougle followed with her second tally of the year, converting an assist from Urisko at 58:20 mark to make it 3-1, and Jones notched her fifth of season just a 1:52 later off a feed from McDougle to give the Green and White a 4-1 advantage. Malone then capped the scoring with her team-leading ninth marker of the fall in the 64th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.) stopped four shots for Babson, while Hicks came up with two saves for the Fighting Scots.
The Beavers held an 11-6 edge in shots and an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners on the afternoon.
Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Union at 6 p.m., while Gordon will travel to Western New England on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start.
