No. 4 Tufts Uses Second-Half Run To Push Past Men's Lacrosse, 16-5

Box Score

MEDFORD, Mass.— Sophomores Chris Schoenhut (Mill Neck, N.Y.) Cole Bailey (Millersville, Md.) and senior Ben Saperstein (Hewlett, N.Y.) each scored three times and No. 4 Tufts University tallied the first six goals of the second to half to pull away from visiting Babson College for a 16-5 win in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Tuesday night at Bello Field.

Eight different players scored for the Jumbos, who won their sixth consecutive game to move to 6-2 overall. Juniors Dan Leventhal (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Beau Wood (Sherwood Forest, Md.) each had two goals and senior Adnrew Fiamengo (New Fairfield, Conn.) chipped in with a goal and two assists in the victory.

Babson, which lost for the fifth time in its last six games to fall to 4-5 overall, got a goal and an assist from Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.), who also won 13 face-offs and picked up eight ground balls, both game highs. Senior Mike Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.), junior Alex Packer (Hudson, Ohio), and first-years Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) and Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) all had one goal for the Beavers, who scored three times in a 1:23 span midway through the first quarter to open a 3-0 lead.

Tufts responded with four straight goals to end the first quarter, including two from Saperstein, and goals from sophomore Jeff Chang (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Wood just 13 seconds apart helped extend the Jumbos lead to 6-3 with 9:33 left in the second quarter. Packer stopped the run with his fifth goals of the season for Babson to pull within 6-4, but an unassisted goal by Fiamengo helped Tufts match its biggest lead of the game at 7-4 going into halftime.

Tufts would out-score Babson 9-1 in the second half, including 4-0 in the third quarter. Bailey had a man-down goal for Tufts at 7:59 of the third, and Levanthal's strike at 3:27 pushed the Jumbo advantage at 11-4 heading into the fourth.

Leventhal completed another six-goal run by the hosts that put the margin at 13-4 with 9:48 remaining in regulation. Low broke the run at 9:28 of the fourth, but the Jumbos finished up with a pair by Schoenhut and a late goal by Bailey for the final margin.

Senior James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) made 10 saves on the night for Babson while first-year Alex Salazar (Summit, N.J.), making his first collegiate start, stopped 18 shots for Tufts.

The Jumbos are averaging 17.3 goals in three games during their current homestand. In addition to Salazar's goaltending, senior John Heard (Greenwich, Conn.) caused four turnovers on defense. Junior Kane Delaney (Brookeville, Md.) collected seven groundballs and Read finished with five.

Shots were an even 40-40 in the game, while Tufts produced a 39-33 advantage in groundballs. The teams combined for 42 turnovers, including 23 by Babson.

The Jumbos are home next on Saturday when they host Williams in a NESCAC game starting at 1 pm. Babson is at Manhattanville on Friday at 4 pm.
