Union Hands Men's Lacrosse First Loss, 10-6

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—Junior attack Nate Greenberg (Westport, Conn.) and first-year attack Nolan Stauffer (Redding, Conn.) each scored twice and sophomore goalie Stephan Basile (Fayetteville, N.Y.) made 13 saves as Union College rallied to beat visiting Babson College, 10-6, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field.

With the win, Union moves to 2-1 while Babson falls to 3-1 with the loss.

Sophomore Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored three goals to lead the Beavers, while senior Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) scored a goal and and notched an assist. Junior Brad Bero (Carlisle, Mass.) and senior Mike Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) each added a goal and first-year Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) chipped in with an assist.

The Dutchmen scored twice in the opening 4:13 of the first quarter to take an early 2-0 lead but Babson ran off four of the game's next five goals, getting tallies from Griffin and Barsalou to pull even at 2-2 after one quarter. Barsalou gave the Beavers their first lead of the day midway through the second quarter, and after Stauffer tied the game for Union, Barsalou's third goal of the first half with 2:13 remaining in the period gave the Beavers a 4-3 lead at halftime.

Union took control of the game with a five-goal run to open the third quarter as Greenberg scored on back-to-back possessions just 47 second apart to take a 5-4 lead at the 11:45 mark. Junior Greg Mooney (Pearl River, N.Y.), first-year Paul Alberti (Madison, Conn.) and Stauffer followed with goals of their own as the Dutchmen opened up their biggest lead of the game at 8-4 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Babson rallied, though, as Bero scored his second goal of the season with 2:29 left in the third period and Patinkin scored his only goal of the day to trim the deficit to 8-6 with 11:05 remaining in the game. Unfortunately the Beavers would get no closer as Union got late goals from sophomore Richard Gregory (Darien, Conn.) and senior Joe Cordrey (Summit, N.J.) to put the game away.

Senior James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) made a season-high 14 stops for Babson, who outshot Union 43-40 on the afternoon. The Dutchmen held a 46-28 advantage in ground balls and won 14 of the game's 20 faceoffs as well.

Sophomore John Joseph (Bolton, Mass.) picked up a team-high six ground balls while junior Cam Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) caused a game-high three turnovers for Babson.

Both teams will be back in action next Saturday as Babson heads south to take on Colorado College at 6:00pm on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, while Union will travel to face Springfield College at 1:00pm.
