Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior Soozin Kang (Bordentown, N.J.) and senior Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Halls, Mass.) knocked home goals late in the second half to propel visiting Babson College to a 2-0 triumph over WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey matchup on Saturday morning at Alumni Field.
With its fifth straight win, Babson moves to 7-4 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in league play. WPI falls to 4-6 on the year and 0-3 in NEWMAC contests.
Junior Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) began what proved to be the game-winning sequence when her insertion was passed back to her by the near post following a stick stop by senior Julia Pochini (Acton, Mass.). Malone calmly crossed it through a crowded box when it was redirected into the net by Kang at 56:49 for her first goal of the season.
The Beavers registered a key insurance tally when Lockwood collected a nifty pass from Pochini and buried her ninth goal of the year at 66:34.
The first half was scoreless with Babson having a goal disallowed due to an infraction following a penalty corner in the ninth minute. WPI's best chance came on a mad scramble in front of the Beaver cage in the 34th minute but the Babson defense was able to clear. The visitors also had a goal waved off early in the second half due to a foul on a penalty corner.
Senior Kayla Florence (Milton, Mass.) made one save en route to recording her second solo and the team's fifth shutout of the season. Lauren Puishys (Oxford, Mass.) was solid in net for WPI, making five stops. SarahRose Gabor (Cazenovia, N.Y.) aided the WPI effort with a pair of defensive saves in the second half.
For the game, Babson enjoyed a 13-3 edge in shots, including all nine in the second half, and a 13-1 bulge in corners. Mary-Lee Barboza (Rochester, Mass.), Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Grace Davis (Sandwich, Mass.) all notched shots for WPI.
Both teams continue their NEWMAC schedules with home games against local foes on Tuesday evening as Babson entertains Wellesley at 7:30 p.m., while WPI hosts crosstown rival Clark at 7 p.m.
Game Notes: Babson is now 17-15 all-time against WPI…The Beavers are 12-3 in their last 15 road games going back to November 2, 2011…During its current five-game winning streak, Babson has outscored its opponents 21-2 and has registered four shutouts…The Green and White have won 11 consecutive NEWMAC regular seasons matches going back to the start of the 2012 season.
