BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.) and sophomore Brad Bero (Carlisle, Mass.) scored three goals apiece and Babson College outscored visiting MIT 13-2 over the first three quarters en route to a 14-6 victory over the Engineers in Pilgrim League men's lacrosse action this afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With its third straight victory, and fourth in five games, Babson moves to 8-4 (2-0 Pilgrim League), while the loss drops MIT to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the Pilgrim League.

Schmidt chipped in with two assists to go along with his three first-half tallies to pace 10 different goal scorers on the day for the Beavers. Sophomore Mike McStravock (Windham, N.H.) had a goal and two assists, sophomore Alex Packer (Hudson, Ohio) added a goal and added an assist, while top scorer, junior Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) contributed two assists.

MIT was led by two goals apiece from juniors Gabe Blanchet (Hadley, Mass.) and Sean Burke (Centennial, Colo.). Blanchet added one assist and senior Ernie Park (Plainsboro, N.J.) chipped in with two assists for the Engineers.

Schmidt opened the scoring just 41 seconds into the game, and his second goal of the game, following an MIT turnover, put Babson ahead 2-0 with 8:27 remaining in the first quarter. Despite dominating possession in the opening 15 minutes and holding an 11-2 advantage in shots, the Beavers wouldn't extend their lead until early in the second quarter. Following an MIT timeout, Schmidt completed his hat trick, shedding a defender going to his right and burying a low shot into the net for a 3-0 Babson advantage with 11:51 remaining in the first half.

After the teams traded failed man-up opportunities midway through the first half Babson junior goalkeeper James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) made the toughest of his three saves, denying Engineers' sophomore Elliot Sykora's (Willmette, Ill.) transition opportunity from point blank range to keep MIT scoreless. The Engineers finally got on the board with 3:35 remaining before halftime when junior goalkeeper Christopher Rullan (Wexford, Pa.) ignited the fast break after saving a hard shot from Babson's Jeremy Yudkin (Franklin Lakes, N.J.). Rullan hit junior Mike Gibson (Natick, Mass.) just over midfield and he fed Blanchet for an easy score to cut the Babson advantage to 3-1.

The Beavers bounced right back, scoring four times in the final three minutes of the first half to blow the game open and take a 7-1 advantage into intermission. Packer scored on a feed from Schmidt to make it 4-1, and senior Jeff MacCune (Braintree, Mass.) won the faceoff and tallied 11 seconds later for a 5-1 Babson lead. The Beavers scored again just 1:19 later when Patinkin made up for his own turnover in the offensive zone by getting the ball right back and feeding Bero for his first goal of the day, before senior Scott Schacter (Rumford, R.I.) closed the first half scoring, following an MIT turnover at midfield, with his 10th goal of the season just 16 seconds before the break.

Bero and Sykora traded goals in the first 1:42 of third quarter before Babson embarked on a 6-0 run that spanned the next 14:45. McStravock, junior Mike Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.), and sophomore Bobby MacCune (Braintree, Mass.) netted the first three goals before senior Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.) and Bero tallied 59 seconds apart late in the third quarter for a 13-2 lead with 15 minutes to play. Yudkin would score Babson's final goal of the game just 1:27 into the fourth quarter to push the advantage to 14-2, the Beavers' biggest lead of the day.

Blanchet and sophomore Tim Wilczynski (Old Lyme, Conn.) scored early in the fourth quarter for MIT before Burke added the final two goals of the game for the 14-6 final.

Sophomore Adam Daroff (Pepper Pike, Ohio) and junior Ryan Lee (Wallingford, Conn.) combined to make four saves in the second half for Babson in relief of Whalen, while Rullan made 21 stops in net for MIT.

Babson first-year Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) picked up a game-high 11 ground balls, while sophomore Ryan Dawidjan (Worcester, Mass.) and first-year Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) forced four and three turnovers, respectively. Sophomore Ben Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.) picked up a team-high six ground balls for MIT and Sykora and senior Bryan Beller (Dix Hills, N.Y.) each forced four turnovers for the Engineers.

The Beavers held a 35-13 advantage in shots on goal, won 17 of 24 faceoffs, and forced 37 MIT turnovers on the afternoon.

Both squads are back in action on Wednesday with Pilgrim League road games as Babson heads to Wheaton College for a 4:00p.m. game, while MIT travels to Regis College for a 7:00p.m. start.
