Men's Lax Tops Hartwick, 16-11, To Move To 2-0

Box Score

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Babson College men's lacrosse team collected its second win of the season on Saturday as the Beavers defeated host Hartwick College, 16-11, at Wright Stadium.

Senior Tom Mallon and junior Jamie Schmidt each had four goals for the Beavers (2-0), while sophomore Brad Bero added three scores. Junior Mike Griffin, first-year Phil Russo, senior Scott Schachter, sophomore Ryan Dawidjan and senior Jeremy Yudkin all scored once.

Defensively, Babson was paced by Dawidjan, who picked up a team-high nine groundballs to go with five caused turnovers, and Russo, who added six groundballs and 18 face-off wins. Junior goalie James Whalen finished with five saves in net.

Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) led the Hawks (1-1_ with four goals and one assist. Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) scored once and had three helpers. Giuseppe Rice (Peekskill, NY/Peekskill), Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North), Brian Finnegan (East Northport, NY), Mike Morrison (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East), and Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) all had one score each.

Hartwick got on the board first on Rice's goal to go up 1-0. The Beavers scored five unanswered goals before Hughes scored his first of the game to make it 5-2 Babson at the end of the first quarter.

The Beavers tacked on three straight goals in the second to take an 8-2 lead until Hughes scored his second on the day to make it 8-3. Dawidjan scored unassisted to put Babson on top 9-3. The Hawks then caught fire as they would go on to score five straight times covering the second and third quarters and only trailed 9-8 with 8:42 remaining in the third frame.

Babson would start to pull away early in the fourth after Mallon's fourth score of the game gave the Beavers a 12-8 lead at 11:17 of the final period.

Hartwick would find themselves a man down after Cooper was called for slashing. Despite being a man short, the Hawks would rally again as Morrison's score made it 12-9 at 10:59 of the fourth quarter and then 31 seconds later Cassidy would find pay dirt to make it 12-10.

The Hawks momentum ended as Babson rattled off three straight scores to go ahead 15-10. Hartwick would narrow the gap when Rice found Schaefer for the goal to get Hartwick to within four goals at 3:24, but that would be as close as they would get as Babson would strike once more to complete the scoring and come away with the victory.

Hawk goaltender Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway) had 14 saves between the pipes for the Hawks. Morrison had a team-high seven groundballs while Schaefer picked up five. As a team, Hartwick had 33 groundballs to Babson's 40.
